I've genuinely never understood or known how to empathize with catcallers. The one time I talked to catcallers about their behavior was with my neighbors where I lived in Italy who occasionally yelled catcallish things from our balcony to neighboring balconies within our complex (which I mentioned at the time in one of my main effortposts about gender courtship norms and harassment back in late 2017), and I don't think I got any real answer from them about their motives beyond "maybe most of the time women don't like it, but a few may respond well, and in the meantime what else can you do?". A lot of times I've heard it claimed/suggested that catcalling is a display of dominance for the purpose of intimidation. My gut instinct is that that's not quite correct in general, and I'm more inclined to say that it falls under the umbrella of how for many very sexual people, part of that sexuality is an enjoyment of openly asserting that sexuality, and it may be even more sexually stimulating to be able to assert it in a consequence-free way to the object of their sexual attraction. But I have no real evidence that that's the usual motive either.
Is there any kind of firsthand testimony -- a blog post, say -- of a reformed catcaller who explains honestly what made him want to engage in this behavior before he saw the error of his ways?

today i went to walmart. everything was fun and great, i needed some new underwear and socks. i cashed out and was walking back to my car, which i parked far(ther away than usual) but whatever. as i was walking, a group of five or six ADULT men roughly 20 feet away who were walking inside the store started yelling “ooo pretty lady, oi oi pretty lady!!” and laughing and saying a bunch of things in spanish. at this point i was speed walking to my car because i wasn’t sure if they were talking to me or someone else - either way i did not feel safe, they had malice in their voice and i was terrified. after a minute the group of men turn in my direction, away from the entrance and started making a bunch of noise an laughing like hyenas. they started following me to my car. i ran to my car and locked myself inside. as soon as i got to my vehicle they abruptly changed directions and started laughing.
