Also, when they are on dialysis, fat people have a survival advantage over thin people. Does this mean we should deny thin people dialysis until they can gain weight? Wouldn’t that be prudent?

“My ending for Frankie and Johnny almost didn’t survive because of notes from Paramount. I ended the picture with a montage of shots showing the main characters in bed, some with loves, some alone. The studio made noise about a shot of Frankie’s two gay neighbours, Tim and Bobby (played by Nathan Lane and Sean O’Bryan). In the scene I showed the two men simply holding each other, and then panned down to their dog at the end of the bed.

‘Can you cute the scene with the two homosexuals?’ a Paramount executive asked. ‘It might offend some people.’

‘No,’ I said. The men were an important part of the film.

‘’Well…hmmmm…can you cut from the two gay guys to the cuddly doggie a little faster?’

‘No,’ I said.
