Dep Reads: The Left Hand of Darkness
Hey everyone! Iāve been away for a long, long time, and I am sorry for this. This is more of a fangirl diary where I vent and less of an actual, decent blog, and I am in between recording sessions with my new band, so things kind of went downhill in my little corner of the internet.
But! There is a lot of ineffable husbands fan art and fanfic coming, plus I conquered my ADHD and got back to reading actual books. And since I know most of you ineffables are either queer or interested in works featuring queer rep, here is a recommendation, based on what I am currently reading:

The Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula Le Guin
I am ashamed to admit Iād never gotten my hands on this absolute gem of a novel despite my twenty-fiveĀ years. It had been so hyped up to me by friends and acquaiantances that I was super afraid it would not manage to live up to my expectations.
Boy (or girl, or genderless Gethenian) was I WRONG.
So, without further ado, let me tell you, friends, as calmly and astutely as possible. READ THIS THING NOW. No, seriously. Drop whatever it is youāre doing. Read it. It is simply that awesome. It features genderless humanoid aliens, epic adventures in a seemingly endless expanse of hostile, frozen land, lots of politics, and a love story to scream about.
++SPOILERS AHEAD++
So, long story short, this is the story of Genly, an Earthling, sent to the perennially frozen planet Gethen in order to convince the Gethenians to join a sort of confederationTerra is part of. There, our protagonist meets the genderless locals and confronts his own preconceived ideas of feminine and masculine. This is largely due to the deuteragonist, prime-minister-in-exile Estraven, who saves Genly and becomes his most trusted individual in this foreign land.
Duuude. Duuuuuuude. Genly Ai and Estraven. Genly and Estraven. I mean, I get it, Genly, my man. I fell for Estraven about fifty pages in the narrative, and I did not even picture them as being attractive. Estraven alone is a masterclass in how to writeĀ a compelling character: mysterious,Ā kind, and brave, neither man nor woman and infinitely frustrating to manly man (and initially bigoted) Genly.
While Estraven is woefully easy to fall in love with, Genly himself is too easy to roll your eyes at. Gethen irks him. Why are these people neither male nor female? None of them can be his friend, he tells us, because a friend on this planet can become a lover during mating season, and his masculinity cannot abide by that. Estravenās feminine side strikes him as untrustworthy (although, seeing as Estraven is a politican, Genly expects him to be, āless than a man.ā)
The interracial aspects of their interaction further complicate things. The differences in their respective cultures run so deep that misunderstandings abound. Genly realizes far too late that his dislike for Estraven was misguided and we slowly bear witness to his magnificent character arc as he learns to accept the truth: That Estraven is his friend, that he is both male and female while being neither, that Genly himself appears as strange to Estraven as Estraven does to Genly.
They are not soulmates. You donāt get the feeling of two people who belong together, and they are both aware of that. Their love (and you feel tears well up in your eyes as you witness once misogynist Genly actually acknowledge it as love) blossoms under duress, in isolation, precisely because all they have is one another. They never have sex, although both admit to physical attraction in their respective journals, because, as Genly puts it, their sexual encounters would be encounters bewteen strangers, borne from their similarities whereas their existing love has taught them to bridge their differences. (In retrospect, he wonders if they made the wrong decision; in retrospect, I think they did.)
And, dear oh dear. You actually see the tragedy snowballing towards you since the very beginning, but oh, what a delicious pain. Estraven leaves a hole in your chest like it does in Genlyās, who is left alone and forlorn, anxious to fill the gap and unable to. And you actually get it, because Estraven was an individual of fascinating extremes, brave and self-sacrificial but methodical to a fault, capable of loving completely and inspiring that kind of love in others.
I swear, Iāve never felt so emotional about a novel before. Passionate, yes, in love with the charactersā love, yes, but this? This cracked me right open. During their travels Genly breaks protocol and actually teaches Estraven how to do telepathy, something forbidden. From that point onwards, there is a mysterious parallel drawn between Genly and Estravenās sibling Arek, culminating in Estravenās single dying word, that very same name.
The explanation doesnāt come until the very last page, and it is so hearbreaking it had me tugging at my own hair. I hate this book. I love this book. I want to hurl the little papery bastard across my room and then pick it in my arms like a goddamn baby. This story broke me. Estraven broke me. They made me fall in love and then sacrificed themselves, leaving me like Genly, forlorn and with a human-shaped hole in my heart.
Damn this book to hell. Bless this book to Heaven.
Aziraphale spread his fingers over Crowleyās coverts, skimming gentle fingertips down them until he reached one of the white points. āTheyāre warm,ā he breathed, glancing up again.
āTheyāre stars,ā Crowley whispered, not entirely sure he was ready to be heard. "Well, not- not quite in this dimension, but, you know.ā
Aziraphaleās eyes widened and for just a second Crowley thought he had made a mistake, but all Aziraphale did was look back down, eyes tracking over the dotted patterns in his wings. Crowley could tell that he was looking with more than just mortal eyes now, and he held himself perfectly still as Aziraphaleās true form brushed against his in exploration, burning and bright.
āConstellations,ā Aziraphale said, returning back to the compression of mortality. "Crowley, whyā¦?ā
Crowley forced a smile that couldnāt hide the pain of that answer. āIā¦ Before, I was a starshaper. When thingsā¦ when I saw what was coming, I couldnāt stand to think of losing all of them.ā
āYou hid them in your wings, when you were cast down,ā Aziraphale said, so brokenly that Crowley knew he understood, even though he had never shaped stars himself.

Itās been a big 52 weeks on Tumblr.Ā
Maybe it was all part of a great big ineffable plan, but Good Omens was the most popular thing on Tumblr in 2019. Bigger than BTS by exactly 4.43%, but whoās counting? As for BTSā¦well, they deserved a break, but it did cost them the crown. Meanwhile, Marvel had a huge year. We could try to count how many Marvel-related tags are in Year in Review, but itād definitely be at least 3,000. Steven Universe came to an end as a series, but came back as a beautiful feature-length film; the futureās looking bright. And how many SKAM remakes will make the TV list this year? There are two on this oneāwe see you, Germany and France. Game of Thrones also reached its conclusion (did we actually sit through all of those seasons for THAT?). Moving on to the Galar Region, PokĆ©mon gave us the biggest gift of the summer: Wooloo. Thank you, Nintendo. Critical Role returns to this list after a long adventure with the Mighty Nein across Wildemount. And finally, we round things off with the Ship of the Year, our Ineffable Husbands, Aziraphale and Crowley. This is Tumblrās Week Year in Review.

He just hang with the wrong people. Sketching to pass the time, things getting, as per usual, angsty.
Some concept art for my angsty fanfic, the one I am writing at glacial paces and everybody must think is fictional by this point.
My headcanon is that *if* Zira falls, Crowley, who wishes he had someone by his side when he went through the pain, will take *such good* care of him. Not only because he is a giver by nature but because our soft boy Zira would be destroyed otherwise.
I used sloppy lines and abstract coloring because I wanted to depict a vague sense of loss, of whatever might be transpiring within Ziraās head as he sports this forlorn expression. Because the scene is both sad and incredibly intimate I wished to draw it in a cartoony (ish) style that would take some of the edge off.

I was searching for the poster from Good Omensā Hell (to print and hang around in my officeā¦) and I stumbled into this little gem of a website. It looks like no one has mentioned it yet here on Tumblr, so if you, like me, have missed it, I suggest you go visit right now.

Itās a simple click and browse website but itās very fun to visit! And itās clearly been made with lots of love for the book and the tv series.
It was made by the same company that published the soundtrack to Good Omens, Silva Screen ( @silvascreenrecordsā ) and if you click around you can find some bonus material from the show and the CD.
I was able to download the digital bookletĀ from the soundtrack, with introduction by Neil Gaiman. I also visited Heaven, Hell, Eden and Aziraphaleās bookshop.Ā
And at the end I was rewarded with a lot of cool wallpapers!
