Grief (Yamato & Takeru)
Disclaimer: This is a small piece of work that I wrote for the Takari Week that I could not post, but that I really enjoyed writing, so I decided to share! I love the family dynamics that we have in Digimon and everything about these two siblingsâ relationship! Enjoy!
âââââ âĄÂ âââââ
âDad as always is going to come home late.â Yamato said while putting a hand full of spaghetti pasta into the boiling water pot. âIs mom home?â
âI think by now she is. But she must be locked in the office writing some article for the newspapers. You know, the usual.â
âThose two have more in common than they would ever admit.â
âI guess you have a point.â
Takeru took a sip from the tin the Coca-Cola Yamato had given to him. âMaybe that is the reason why they are no longer together; they are too similar to stand each other.â
âIt can be.â Yamato laughed a bit. âI am very proud of you for being able to talk about it so openly now. Not a long time ago you would dismiss the topic and pretend you didnât hear my comment.â
âIâve been making some progress. As time passed, I think I just accepted the fact that some things would never change, and I have been trying my best to heal from it the best way I can. Writing my feelings down help a lot.â Â
âI understand.â Yamato bent down and took out of a wood drawer a jar with the word 奊 (salt) written in hand, and another with the word éťčĄć¤ (black pepper). âYour therapy is writing, mine is creating music. I would never admit it to them, but some songs I have wrote are inspired by them.â
âThere is beauty in transforming pain into art. At least their story can be signified as such.â
âExactly. You thought that line yourself?â
âI have been practicing.â Takeru smiled shyly noticing how Yamato observed his sentence.
âI can tell.â Yamato carefully put a pinch of salt and black pepper in the pot where the pasta was boiling. âYou said you wanted to talk about something on the phone. What could it be?â
âOhâŚthat. Well, I think I may need some⌠dating advice.â Takeru said and felt a sudden urge to hide himself under the table out of shyness.
âWhat?â Yamato turned around quickly to face his brother with his mouth wide open. He was still holding the jars.â Who is it?â
âAhâŚâ Takeru looked away and started to tap his hand on the table insecurely. âDo you think Taichi is the jealous type of brother⌠or would he be ok if IâŚ?â
âTaichi? No way!â Yamato quickly pulled the chair next to him and noisily sat down in front of Takeru. âThere is no way you are dating Hikari!â
âTheoretically, I am notâŚYet. I invited her for a date on Saturday⌠and she said yes.â
âI seeâŚâ Yamato was speechless. âI mean, congratulations! How⌠did that happened?
âIt is a very long story. But the thing is, I have never been on a date before, I am kind of nervous. I donât exactly know what to do, how to plan⌠â
âYou never asked a girl out?â Â Yamato interrupted him.
âIf I never told you, it's because it never happened.â
âMake sense.â
Yamato let the idea sink into his mind. Not that it wasn't something he had already imagined, or even discussed with Taichi himself. But they always joked about it, he was not prepared to face it in real life.
âSoâŚâ Takeru broke the silence. âYou are going to help meâŚ?â
âLet me⌠finish dinner first. A few minutes and I can answer you. Now I am too busy being surprised.â Yamato stood up and went turning off the pan.
Takeru rolled his eyes and kept drinking the Coca-Cola.
Yamato finished cooking in few minutes and served it, making slight jokes about the topic they were discussing before.
They expressed the typicalăăă ăăžă(itadakimasu) before anything else.
âNow that I am calmer.â Yamato started trying to look as serious as he could. âWhat happened? And please hide unnecessary details I donât want to know.â
Takeru laughed at this and took a few seconds to summarize everything that have happened on this mind. It was still fresh and some things he would admit did not have processed yet. But one thing he was certain of: He could not be happier.
âYou know, I have been receiving love letters from girls at school, and many of them confessed to me. I think I told you about this already.â
âYes, I remember.â Yamato took the chopsticks and divided them, listening attentively.
âIn the quickest way I can summarize this, another one was too much for us to keep pretending we did not care about it. Hikari distanced herself and it was unbearable for me. I knew it was hurting her, and we talked about it after class. And we kissed. I mean, I kissed her.â
âBasically, we two just needed a good excuse to stop playing dumb about how you feel about each other.â
âI can confirm that.â Takeru followed his brother in the previous act. Divided his chopstick as well.
âWell, I donât think you need to do something incredibly complicated for your first date Takeru, really. Your friendship with her naturally evolved into love and I think you should keep things as light as possible. Without pressure, you know her since you were eight, just trust yourself and your feelings.â
âOh wow, I never expected to hear it from you.â Takeru seemed kind of surprised.
âI know, I know. But after several years in a relationship, you start to think about things differently.â
âI can see it.â
âJust take care of her and your relationship properly. Everything will be ok.â
âI⌠donât want to commit the same mistakes mom and dad committed you know.â
âThey are a good example of not taking care of a relationship properly.â Yamato said with as much sincerity as he could. âDad was never at home, and mom needed to work and take care of us alone most of the time. He was always too busy working. And she needed support. Not financially, but all the other kinds, and dad just let it go. They had a very deficient communication. All I can remember were they screaming their problems at each other, frustrated and confused.â
âI remember that too. And for some reason, I remember blaming myself for it, most of the time. I think dad never expected mom to actually⌠leave.â
âI felt that as well. I blamed myself not just for the screaming, but for the divorce. Mom just couldnât take that it anymore.â
âI donât want to⌠be like them.â
âWe are not our parents, Takeru.â Yamato smiled at him, reminding the time he started to date Sora, when he had the same mental dilemma Takeru was having.â We were there, we know what happened, and we have the tools to do differently. â
âI know.â
Takeru smiled sadly, trying to remove those dark days from the focus of his present-day memory. At least he knew that Yamato understood him and these waves of old grief feelings. It didnât matter what happened in the past, if he now got the tools to create a better future. Yamato was right, he needed to trust his feelings, and trust Hikari. Trust that they were able to create a relationship with a solid base of love and respect. He was the one in charge of creating his own fate, and he chose her to be his other side of the mirror.

Having the small cute Digimon pose as plush toys is one thing, but having the Gotsumon pose as statues in the classroom? Not so sure whether it's a good idea...

DIGIMON ADVENTURE 25TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL VIDEO ~Evolution: Show me your brave heart!~
The thing I love about that 25th anniversary video is that you can finally see everyone's faces in this scene. It always bugged me that everyone was so obscured during the goodbye.
painstakingly stitched this together because it's so cute
Not to get emo on main but you ever think about how the troop sang about their dreams of finding âa girl worth fighting forâ, and they think their girl worth fighting for is one of romance, but the song abruptly comes to a halt when they find a different girl worth fighting for.
A tiny girl that had been killed at the hands of the Huns. A child too weak, too small to have any chance of withstanding the murderous invaders. That is their girl worth fighting for.
This is fucking horrific
Itâs also worth noting that âA Girl Worth Fighting Forâ is the last song in the movie. Up until here, itâs a fun movie, and the imminent invasion feels like itâs just there to keep the plot moving, and to provide a little bit of drama to spice things up. None of the soldierâs are quite taking this seriously yet; sure, Mulan wanted to save her father from the draft, and on some level she was aware that he would die if he went to war, but beyond that sheâs interested in not being caught, and not shaming her family. Her motives are good, but theyâre entirely self centered. All the other soldiers are more or less in the same boat - they want to get tougher, they want to impress girls, they want to be cool soldiers. Shangâs easily the most serious of the bunch at first, and even then itâs just because training bad soldiers will reflect poorly on him, and important people are paying attention.
The abrupt ending of âA Girl Worth Fighting Forâ is the wake up call. The soldiers and the audience get slapped in the face with the realization of whatâs really at stake here. China is being invaded. Villages are burning, civilians are dying, and this isnât going to stop until the country is conquered or the invaders are defeated. This is not a fun musical, this is a major crisis.
Mulan is such a good movie for so many reasons, but the abrupt tone shift is such a major reason why. Itâs an excellent commentary on the reality of war, and it being a kids movie just meant they had to make their point without showing any actual gore, which Iâd honestly say makes it that much more poignant.
That moment, when they come over the rise and see the razed village is one of the best scenes in film. Period. Somehow, instead of giving me tonal whiplash, it took my breath away, and thatâs one fuck of a balancing act.
when the genre of a story is used to enhance what's telling
When you take a fun musical kids film with fun catchy songs and make war a key part of it and instead of going "oh no but the whiplash" the mood whiplash is instead used ONCE, deliberately, permanently, to help the audience feel, even on a meta sense, that something just changed forever
