It is a bit of a bitter pill but like, it's really genuinely excruciatingly difficult to try to be friends with girls who aren't communist transfeminists because they just like haven't gotten their vaccinations against rancid, festering bits of mainstream ideology that tell them that they and other girls hurting themselves and letting themselves be hurt is no big deal, so then like every other conversation with them is to the tune of 'hey I'm being treated like shit by someone in my life that makes me chronically stressed' 'wow they sound like a piece of shit' 'oh no they're not that bad they did something else good for me and really I'm a bad [daughter][partner][friend] anyway so they deserve to treat me that way' and you just like. Sigh really loud as you go through the process of wrestling a stray down for a vaccination.

This also makes any attempt to give any of your other friends advice a quick time event before the mainstream friend can reinforce their imbibed self hatred. Self respect doesn't just affect the self, it affects the way you see everyone around you, what you think they deserve, the advice you give them, the beliefs you reinforce in them. If you don't respect yourself you will innately respect everyone around you less, because you won't be able to see the horrible things that happen to them clearly, since the same happens to you and you think you deserve it.

i do think what gets ignored about carrie as a character is that she’s an incredibly easy target to bully; she’s a chubby, sheltered acne ridden teenage girl who wears frumpy grandma clothes and regurgitates the jesus freak shit her violently abusive mother tells her. she has violent thoughts about her classmates and is uncomfortable to be around. she’s far more interesting being a victim that’s somewhat uncomfortable to be in the head of than a tragic waif. she’s not a martyr, she’s a child and a child who’s been victimised her whole life shouldn’t have to be kind and angelic to be recognised as a victim. suffering teenage girls shouldn’t just be presented on screen as toned down glamorous thin ophelias, suffering teenage girls can be fat and poor and think violently. i do think we need to examine why culturally we need teenage girls to be beautiful and kind to valorise their suffering and treat it as bad
