Mills #4 (15 km)

Adam Driver as Mills in “65,” in quietly fierce profile against a lush backdrop, the waves of his hair in damp tangles, brows lightly knitted in concentration over his focused gaze, mouth gently parted, bearded chin dipped slightly to his chest.

It should go without saying that this will have spoilers for the movie, but:

***SPOILERS AHOY, YE HAVE BEEN WARNED***

“65” isn’t a dinosaur movie with Adam Driver in it, it’s an Adam Driver movie about grief, loss, love, courage, and how we define “family” that happens to also have dinosaurs, and that’s an important distinction to make. I expected Adam to do his usual magic trick of bringing a character that’s only lived in 2 dimensions on a few pieces of paper to vivid life, and he did not disappoint. I was lucky enough to be able to go see “65” twice on opening day, and I’m still attempting to process all of my really huge feelings about this character as a result. I started painting this two weeks ago, finished it just before I went to go see it for the first time, and now I suddenly have so much more context for this scene. This moment comes fairly early on in the story. Having lost his own daughter to a terminal illness, unable to be with her in her final days due to the job that was paying for her treatment, Mills was already a heartbroken man. Initially, thinking he was the sole survivor of this catastrophic crash, he is overcome with suicidal despair, grieving for all of those he was powerless to save. The discovery of another survivor, the knowledge that he is not, in fact, alone in this predicament, fills him with a new found determination to find a way to get home. Not for his own sake– he made it clear with his first message reporting the crash, when he believed himself alone, that he views his own life as not being worth saving– but for the sake of the young girl he finds himself the sole protector of.

Mills wouldn’t risk fighting his way across 15 km to that shuttle for himself, but it’s clear he is willing to do it for her.

This moment comes just after dawn on their first full day post-crash; Mills is scouting the area, searching for the missing section of his ship that contains the escape pod which will, hopefully, carry them to a rendezvous with a rescue mission. He’s spotted an intense flash of light, high up the side of a mountain, and is using his scanning device to take a better look.

His hair is tangled, shiny with damp but swept neatly enough back from his face, a few gleams of silver glinting at his temple and along the crown of his head. The same light shining off those waves is also caught beautifully in his brow, lashes, and the fine hairs of his beard, and the angle at which it falls emphasizes the topography of his cheek, the subtle folds, tiny scars, and moles, as well as the hollow under the wide sweep of his cheekbone. Still in his protective suit, Mills is gazing intently at the device he’s holding at arm’s length, eyebrows drawn in and down, rumpling the skin above them, the lower lids of his eyes pursed slightly as he focuses on the image projected, which you can see faintly reflected on the surface of his eye.

Sometimes I legitimately forget ep9 is a real thing. I've read so many fanfictions that did such a better job they occupy a far larger section of my heart and mind. The only time TROS comes up is when one of my friends wants to get really drunk and crap all over a bad movie because at the end of the day that's all TROS is to anyone who didn't like it.

Because I've read fanfiction EP9s that have brought me to tears and gave these characters that we've fallen in love with over the years truly good and meaningful endings. Those are the stories I choose to be canon.

Plus, at the rate Disney is going it's not like you have to worry about where they plan on taking the story. I'm not entirely sure they have anything planed for the sequel trilogy in the next many years.

Like, that’s a mistake Palpatine never made. Sheev has always aimed to make the best use of all assets and opportunities available to him. While using Maul as a blunt instrument, he was already courting Dooku as his political pawn and then he groomed Anakin to become his apprentice. He has allowed Dooku to use darksiders like Ventress and Opress as muscle. He established the Inquisitors. And he always still kept his sights on all other potential replacements for Vader. That was somewhat more overt in the EU, but even in Canon, he never left Vader to rest on his laurels, even before an ideal successor in the form of Luke came around. Long story short, if there was an available resource, he used it.

On the other hand, Snoke comes across Rey, a Force prodigy, Kylo’s equal in the Force. He is very much aware of Rey’s potential. What does he do? Does he try to turn her to his side? Does he recruit her to the Knights of Ren? Nope, he smacks her around, laughs in her face, siphons Luke’s location out of her head and then orders Kylo to execute her. Even though he is disappointed in Kylo and his lack of progress and dedication to the Dark side, even though he could just chalk him off as a failed experiment, replace him and start fresh with Rey, like Palpatine wanted with Luke as Vader never fully lived up to what he expected from him either.

But why? As others have already noted, Snoke is kind of a villainious in-universe take on a traditionalist SW fan. The kind obsessed with lore, bloodlines and minutiae in the wrong way. He appropriates the Imperial iconography for himself even though he never had anything to do with the Empire himself. He collects old relics of Darth Vader. He surrounds himself and cultivates a veneer of tradition and heritage. He picked out Ben specifically for his genes.

And that’s why he can’t let him go and that’s why he has no respect for Rey. Rey has no value for Snoke. For all her skill and strenght, she’s nothing to him, because she’s just a random orphan girl from an unremarkable dustbowl of a planet on the borders of known space. Kylo Ren, an inheritor of the mighty Skywalker blood, though? Now that’s a jewel Snoke can put on his crown. How much pride Snoke derived from breaking the grandson of Darth Vader to his will! Could he get the same from a child of some forgotten drunks? So, he’d always choose a conflicted walking disaster that is Ben Solo over a promising tabula rasa like Rey of Jakku. Because Ben is a Skywalker and Rey is a no one.
