do we think maybe that making headcanons where a character of color is violent in a way he is not in canon so we can imagine a white character stepping in and defending people from this OOC violence is, i dunno, in poor taste? perhaps?

Because that is… kind of what happened in the show? When Ed steered the ship into a hurricane and Izzy hobbled out to shoot him to keep from killing the crew. Sure, that wasn’t done in the way OP is suggesting for sadistic reasons, it was because he was having a suicidal meltdown and trying to bait them into killing him. But my point is that Izzy did end up saving their lives in canon.

anyway, point is that izzy is not the sole protector of the crew, they all look out for each other. that’s part of what jim talks about with archie earlier in that episode, right after they cut off izzy’s leg. if i thought the show WAS trying to portray “the crew needs izzy to protect them from ed’s violence” i would be highly critical of that choice. luckily the show did not do that!
