the way the writers cap athenaâs and henâs ambitions in the show is so frustrating.
athena wants to be recognized for her work as a cop but when offered a promotion, backs down and says she wants to stay a beat cop.
hen goes to medical school but when itâs time to be a doctor, backs down and stays at the 118.
then hen is offered captain of the 118 and backs down from that too, even though 1. she was a great interim captain and 2. she has literally nothing else going on story-wise now that mara is safely in her and karenâs care
i know the show likes to keep everything the same and it always falls back to the mean, but i hate that these two black women are shown to be incredibly competent but ultimately recessive/unambitious/retiring in the workplace, despite that not being part of their overall character
it reeks of shonda rhimesâs greyâs anatomy idea that women cannot be the best in their field while also maintaining loving relationships with partners and families.
i think in contrast to athenaâs resistance to putting bobbyâs body to rest or buckâs histrionics about the 118 not being the same anymore, hen could have been shown embracing growth and change. or henâs resistance could have been rooted in grief and resolved by chimneyâs speech at the end where she sees sheâs making excuses not to step into her power.
its no less true that chimney or eddie, who are being positioned as frontrunners to be the new captain, have families to take care of, so why give hen this qualm? itâs hard not to see it as gendered/racialized âstay in your placeâ storytelling, whether the writers mean it that way or not
