He hadn’t been planning on going to the party. 

Regulus hated big crowds. Loud music, thumping bass, the smell and press of sweaty bodies.

But as he’d sat in his own nearly-empty common room, he’d started to picture it: girls hanging off of James Potter’s arms. The alcohol making the older boy happy to dance with whomever asked. Party games like spin the bottle or seven minutes in heaven.

So he’d forced himself upstairs, because the suspense was killing him.

And yeah, sure enough, when he arrived in the overcrowded Gryffindor common room, James was the center of attention. Laughing loudly with Sirius and sprawled on a couch, he looked…unfairly attractive. 

And it seemed that Regulus wasn’t the only one who thought so.

As he watched, a girl approached James, leaning down and murmuring something in his ear. Regulus hated her at first glance, but the thing was…she was pretty. She seemed sweet, smiling at James with no ill-intent and a nervous look in her eyes like she was more afraid of rejection than anything else.

It would make sense. For James to dance with her. 

But he leaned back a little, smiling brightly, and loudly said, “Sorry my love! M’taken! Peter, here, is willing and able, though!”

So she waltzed off with Pettigrew and Regulus stared, confused. Because they’d never said…

But then James looked up, as if called by Regulus’s thoughts, and met his eyes.

And he fucking beamed. 

So Regulus, smiling, walked towards him.
