not   for   the   first   time,   there's   little   left   for   benji   to   do   but   smirk   at   the   narrowing   of   her   eyes,   body   pressed   so   casually   up   against   the   pillar   of   her   porch   that   one   might   never   guess   his   intentions   of   bugging   her   into   accepting   his   company. “ c'mon,   chae, ” he   goads,   one   foot   kicking   out   towards   her ; he's   eleven   inches   short   of   the   hit   landing,   but   it's   the   thought   that   counts. “ you   say   it   like   i'm   asking   you   to   help   me   cover   up   a   murder — ‘s   one   night   with   me,   you   don’t   want   me   to   freeze   out   here,   do   you ? ”

if   there's   ever   been   a   way   to   discern   theatrics   from   sincerity,   the   roll   of   her   eyes   contradicting   the   way   she   leans   closer   to   him   is   as   good   a   method   as   any.   her   expression   remains   unimpressed,   the   cock   of   her   chin   leaving   no   room   for   misunderstanding.   she   isn't   oblivious   to   what   he   wants,   no   more   than   he's   oblivious   to   how   soon   she'll   cave.     “  you   know   something,  ”     she   says,   voice   almost   mockingly   contemplative.  “  i   thought   about   it,   and   i   actually   am   okay   with   you   freezing   out   here.   it   might   build   some   character   in   you.   or   should   i   risk   my   propriety   just   so   you   don't   experience   a   little   chill   ?  ”

her   argument   dies   in   her   throat,   captured   between   pursed   lips.   she   turns   her   gaze   towards   the   window,   where   the   1am   hues   peer   back   at   her.   drumming   her   fingers   against   the   table,   she   tries   not   to   flinch   at   the   accuracy   of   his   words.   she   wants   to   cry   now,   though   it's   not   inherently   in   her   nature.   it's   just   ⎯⎯   hard   to   sit   with.   this.   all   of   it.   shifting   her   eyes   back   towards   him,   she   lets   the   corners   of   her   mouth   fall   only   the   slightest   bit.       “  don't   you   have   anything   better   to   do   ?   and   i   mean   that   literally.   it's   1   o'clock   in   the   morning   for   you,   too.   aren't   you   here,   um   ...   for   a   reason   ?  ”
