 takes    a    seat    on    the    edge    of    the    mattress,    memory foam    giving    way    beneath    him    while    his    fingers    tap    idly    against    the    bare    skin    of    his    leg.    it    happened    once,    then    twice    and    now    too    many    times    for    him    to    keep    track.    both    swore    it    was    casual,    but    these    late    nights    tangled    up    in    each    other    are    beginning    to    blur    the    definition.    rolls    his    neck    once,    hands    bracing    against    his    knees    like    he's    about    to    stand.    ‘    i    have    to    cancel    tomorrow,    by    the    way.    ’    doesn't    care    to look    back    at    the girl in his bed,    instead    reaching    for    the    water    bottle    on    his    nightstand.    ‘    i    have    a    date.    ’

 large    door    clicks    shut    behind    her    and    already    the    evening    improves    considerably.    doesn't    bother    with    the    lights,    grateful    the    low lit    room    remains    free    from    anyone    discussing    their    investment    portfolios    —    or    their    summer    homes,    or    their    opinions    on    the    current    administration.    drifts    deeper    into    the    room,    champagne    flute    resting    between    delicate    fingers,    instant    quiet    feels    like    a    sweet    relief.    just    outside    the    room,    some    senator's    wife    rambles    on    about    a    renovation    that,    by    grace's    count,    had    been    ongoing    for    four    years.
