I decided to replace the 3D face topology with a flat panel, and drawing the face with grease pencil. It was soooo worth it, this is way more freeing and fun.

i approach it a couple ways by either just drawing ellipses + adding "eyelids" or "eyebrows" and erasing or drawing them already in a shape (usually do this for squintier expressions). i also really like making his antennas more circular shaped vs oval shaped for blank expressions bc i find it funny / i find its an easy way to make him look like hes in some kind of default pose without an expression.
