'Casually' tosses a shard at them when they're busy.
They catch it without looking up.

It sounded ridiculous that someone like her would be dragged to a job such as that one. The general was far from being another one of the guards that aided the dreamers with their duties to Falonādin, she was far from the type that should be dragged to protect priests to high priests into events. It was not because that was a jobĀ beneath her but because it was not something that she was good at. There were people within the Faithful that were trained for such things, the priestess herself had been trained but she was the first to admit that when it came to social events she was not the best and should never be the first option. But some priests just had this notion that because she was the highest in position that she should be the one accompanying them wherever they walked. While it was true that she was the best in what she did, fighting nobles and separating intrigues was not something that she looked forward to. She was, first and foremost, a teacher, the one that mobilized the armies guided by the voice of Falonādin himself.
āThink of it as anĀ opportunityĀ to have the best and most expensive food around, Nasātaronā. The voice of the Dirthamen general came to her mind gently, a small smile forming on her lips. They always knew what to say, even if they knew that being able to eat the same food that they presented for the guests would never actually happen. āArenāt you funny, as if they would ever let me even come close to the foodā. she can hear a chuckle coming from them before the silence is taken over by the music when they entered the hall. The generalās head tilts when the high priest dismisses her. Well, it wasnāt quite a dismissal, she would still be around like every other guard that had come to accompany their respective nobles.Ā āThere is so much work to doĀ Nasātaron, and here I am, I donāt understand why they keep asking me to do this.ā thereās an inaudible sigh when the general turns to give orders to the rest of the soldiers and moves to the sidelines of the court, hands behind her heavy armour hidden only by a formal robe that was required in such situations.

These occasions seemed to grow more circular with every passing formality. Even attending only the bare minimum required to keep face, the effort expended to watch the moving pieces was gaining in sum. The pieces often moved in patterns, the same dance with the same steps, but to disregard one would be to risk losing track of the pattern, and they cannot afford that.Ā
The Thief drifted in and out of the dance, joining the revelry in one group and then another, assuring that their presence was felt by those with whom it mattered, and those with whom it did not. Those with whom it did not were the ones that mattered more, those whose casual observations and instances built in significance when the political shifts gained momentum--or else collapsed. They gambled only one way: with assurance, with safety. It was too long a play to risk failure. The only option was to come out a winner.Ā
They drifted in and out of the dance, drawing level with one whose distaste for these affairs permeated the weave around them. Laughter sparked behind their eyes, and they tilted their chin as they spoke.Ā āIs it your intention to darken the room, or canāt you contain yourself? Surely there are worse tasks than attending a party.ā Surely, but for the life and death of them, nothing comes to mind.Ā

They turn their head only enough to steal a glance atā¦not Josephine, or worse, Leliana (which was certainly a relief), but a stranger. Perhaps it should have been obvious, but who pays enough attention to differentiate between shod feet and bare, especially when trying to nap? Certainly not Alanari, not here.Ā
The newcomer doesnāt so much glance in their direction, opting instead to devote attention to the lifeless, imposing figures upon the wall.Ā Some part of them doesnāt like being ignored. They could have quashed it, turned their back, slipped into sleep - would have, were they not so helpless against their own whims. Itās not what it was, once; theyāre far from a child, and in the now they manifest only in small ways such as this. What harm could there be in greeting a stranger?Ā Still, they donāt act immediately, but shift upwards and closer, tucking their chin atop the curve of the couch, waiting, watching, speaking only when the focus of their attention reaches out to the wall.
āUgly, isnāt he?ā
Now they approach, one flitting step before another carrying them to the strangerās side, and see what they had not before: elvhen, not human. Any lingering tension melts from their shoulders, and Alanari casts a small smile at them. āMuch uglier than Solas apparently thinks - though he didnāt have the chance for a pleasant chat with him before he tried to kill me, so I canāt REALLY blame him for that.ā
āIām Alanari, despite what everyone else here will tell you. Especially when Iāve annoyed them.ā
Their ears twitch and cant, tickling through loose curls to perk in acknowledgement of the approaching steps, though they do not turn their face. Their hand remains against the plaster, fingers trailing the furthest edges of the painting.
āPerhaps Solas would portray him as he should be seen, rather than a foe worthy of your fear, Inquisitor.ā
Their eyes travel to their corners, studying, waiting until the Inquisitor draws close to turn the rest of their face. The lofty title weighs across narrow shoulders, burdening their posture and tightening an already small smile. Miraen pretends they do not notice, tossing hair from their eyes as they allow their own smile to grow, their expression carefully crafted into one of innocence and ignorance.
āThey tell many stories of you, excellency, but I had not yet heard that you possessed an inclination to critique works of art. I suppose that comes in hand with being their subject.ā
They incline their head, dipping their shoulders in a respectful bow. āMiraen, at your service. Forgive my rudeness; I had not intended to disturb you. I thought only to brush up on my modern history, while Solas must be otherwise engaged.ā

Power such as he had not felt in millennia coursed through his fingers. He took a slow, shaking breath, and another. The Crossroads spread out before him, rocks and trees slotting into place and colors dancing through ethereal clouds, as if responding to his presence. How long had it been since this world had felt the power that had shaped it? The power of an evanuris.
No wonder they had feared and worshipped those fool gods, for this power was untold and unimaginable. Solas had forgotten, while walking alongside the Inquisition, simply how muchĀ it was. Caught in the day to day of mortals, his grief peeling back to enjoy stolen moments of levity and friendship, he had simply forgotten how much moreĀ the People had been. How much more heĀ had been.
āMiraen.ā
His voice calm and commanding, its rich timbre electrified with the force of his awesome power. The name became a call, echoing across the Crossroads. He wasnāt the lone bearer of his Peopleās legacy, however, much as it might feel. There was the firefly, the thief: the blade of silence who side-by-side had rebelled against the corruption of the evanuris and freed the People from slavery. A comrade and compatriot until the moment he had torn the world asunder. He had supposed them another casualty of his folly, an ally swept up in the error of pride, and yet there they stood after millennia.
āIt is done.ā
His voice did not shake and his eyes glowed still with her power. Emotion seemed for the moment distant, and he wondered if it were a byproduct of his increase in strength. A colder, harsher part of him laughed at that vain hope, and acknowledged that he had simply stifled his grief, lest it consume him. The atrocity of what he had done to his oldest and dearest friendā¦warranted though he believed it to be, it gnawed at him.
He did not ask if they were ready to begin the fight. They were the both of them tired of this constant war. To mend this broken world itched under his skin and no doubt theirs. He walked the dinanāshiral, and they walked beside him.
They feel his return, far more recognizable than the shadow heād faded into. Still muted, still veiled, but so much more again. His identity echoed, here where the world was almost right. They winked from one location to another, flitting through the air with ease, comforted in an existence that was almost as it had been, a being that was almost right. It wonāt last, canāt last--they cannot remain here, in this in between that recollects the world as it once had been--but for a moment, for this now, they can breathe, and they can move, and they can exist, and they can recognize their friend.Ā
They feel his return before he announces it, and his summons as soon as he thinks it. That he vocalizes it is supplementary. They are already at his side before the last syllable drops.Ā
His grief is there, too. Palpable, despite the effort heās put into burying it. There are no lies, here. Deception is more difficult, more artful, when the world sings like souls. Heās out of practice, but then, so are they. Pity thrums in their breast, when they have no intention of giving it shape.Ā
āYou look different.ā Said with a lilt, accompanied by grim amusement that dimples their cheek and glints behind their eyes. āNew haircut?ā
Thereās an unspoken question, but they give voice to their answer.Ā āIām ready. Tell me what you need.ā
Donāt talk to me. Iām tired and grumpy and Iāll probably make fun of you.
Ann Brashares,Ā The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (via wordsnquotes)
We donāt always get the luxury of having closure. Sometimes things just end. Thereās not always a rhyme or reason for why they do, they just do.

Ā Ā Ā This was not how theyād wanted to spend the day. What did Chantry squabbling have to do with some old darkspawn, and why did every single cleric absolutely need to complain directly to them? One letter after another are tossed aside to be forgotten or turned over to Josephine: left for burning, center for Josie, right for anything they donāt understand.Ā Itās been long enough that theyāre restless, quickly approaching bored to tears, when they remember having another subject to bother Solas over, and what better time than now?Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā They take the steps three at a time, leaving the first door to swing as it wanted, and Alanaās free from the mountains of paperā¦until Josephine comes looking for them, as she always does, but even an hour ofā- oh. Alanari rounds the corner to find the room empty. Heās probably off with Ian then, and theyāre not about to go interrupting that. Instead, they claim the couch for their own, and are feeling drowsiness creep up on them when quiet steps announce another presence.
He isnāt here, but they already knew that. The world may be muted--muted, in a screaming, relentless quiet that leaves their ears ringing--but he is still recognizable amongst the din. No, he isnāt here, but heās nearby, and theyāre certain heāll recognize the proper opportunity to reunite. That much, at least, they had understood.Ā
They stride through the keep as though they belong, drawing little attention. Itās too easy. This is the fortress from which the Inquisition intends to defend the world? There is hardly a pause at the gate, no one checks their entry as they enter the castle. They angle their path to a room full of echoes, thin smile arcing their cheeks as they inhale fresh ink and plaster walls--a powerful scent, even competing with the reek of ravens and dust.Ā
The figure draped across the furniture needs no introduction, Miraen can feel the Anchorās pulse from across the room. It bends and fights against the veil, vibrating pulses that ripple across existence. They consider addressing the Inquisitor directly, indeed, would do so were their purpose not so clear. It is too early yet to raise suspicion. Caution, caution. They do not intend to plant their foot until they are certain of the ground beneath it, and so instead they wander, sparing no glance to the figure upon the couch, and run their hand along the border of the nearest mural, frowning to realize that it does not reach back to them. The dried plaster is as cold and dead as the air they breathe, and that was not the proper order of the world.Ā
