A five minute walk away from Senso-ji Temple, stands the restaurant Komagata Dojo, on Edo Street in Asakusa. You will recognize the building by it’s distinctive Edo era architecture. Founded in 1801, it is one of the original remaining historical structures of the time period. The curtain above the door states that once you pass thru, you will be enjoying Dojo (Loach fish) in the same atmosphere that the common people of the Edo times did.  浅草寺から江戸通りを5分程歩くと現れる江戸情緒溢れる家屋。創業1801年の浅草随一の名店。暖簾をくぐるとそこはまさに江戸庶民の寛ぎの空間。

It’s a large building, with many floors from B1-3F, but I recommend 1F for your first visit. It is called a Irekomi zashiki, which basically means that there is no judgement of who you are or what you do–everyone comes together in this spot to eat. There are no tables and patrons sit on floor cushions, which was the custom of the time. B1～3Fまであるが初めて行くならおススメは断然1Fの入れ込み座敷。

The taste of Dojo (Loach fish) is different from the taste of eel, even though they look similar. It has a peculiar texture, unique to this type of fish. The Dojo is first prepped in boiling sake and then a sweet and salty Warishita broth is added. It is returned to a boil; then scallions, red pepper and Japanese seasonings are added to the pot. 

どぜうの味わいは鰻とも穴子とも似つかない。独特の骨っぽさが残る食べ心地。そして味わいは、生きたどぜうをそのまま酒に入れて火にかけた後、甘辛い割下で煮込み、大量のネギを載せて山椒と唐辛子で食す。

Dojo is complimented so nicely by rice and a drink of sake, that before you know it you will be intoxicated by your experience at Komagata Dojo; where the authentic charm and hospitality of the Edo era remains to this day. 

ご飯にあわせればどんどん進み、日本酒を飲めば気づけばへべれけ。駒形どぜうの風情とおもてなしは今なお残る本物の江戸の風情とおもてなしと言える。

This long-established Tempura restaurant (called DOTE NO ISEYA) on the corner of Yoshiwara Daimon crossing, was founded over 100 years ago in 1889. I first discovered it 10 years back, when the line outside stretched well around the block. Ten years later not much has changed, there is still a dedicated line of patrons waiting to eat a delicious Tempura Bowl at lunchtime without fail. The aroma of sesame oil wafts thru the air above the queue and holds us there, excited to experience the end result. A perfect bite of traditional style tempura, made with the highest quality of ingredients. 

At first glance you might think that tempura would be a heavy dish, but the accompanied Japanese soup broth and refreshing Japanese-style pickles helps to offset the heaviness. You leave the restaurant feeling satisfied, yet with enough spare energy to do some sightseeing. 

1889年創業、吉原大門の交差点にある老舗の江戸前天丼の名店。 初めて訪れたのはもう10年近く前だがいつ来ても行列。 その行列に並んでいる間も上質な胡麻油の香りが食欲をそそり、ようやくありつく一口目を口に入れた時の旨さは筆舌しがたい。 パッと見、胃に重たそうだが、お椀と品の良いお新香がそれを中和してくれて、完食しても胃もたれはしない。

This pre-war wooden house is even recognized by the government as an official historical site. If you would like to experience a taste of downtown Tokyo during the Showa era, I recommend DOTE NO ISEYA. Use the time waiting in queue to admire the traditional architecture, and take some photos for yourself!
