Reflecting on Thailand
This past summer I ventured to Thailand to learn about Buddhism and Conservation. The trip was unlike anything I have ever experienced before!
I must say, after I lived in Scotland, and after I moved to California, travel put a very bad taste in my mouth. The idea of leaving home and venturing into the unknown coupled excitement and crippling anxiety. But this Earth Expedition with Project Dragonfly helped to soothe that anxiety away. I went in stressed from the moving across the country to a job that I disliked, and predisposed negative travel experiences. This class redefined how I travel and how I look at the world.
In the course, we talked about conservation. We stayed in Khao Yai National Park, and heard from rangers about the health of the forest, and the wildfires. When we went to the monastery, we learned about Buddhism, and the efforts they took during the times of the forest fires.
It was very impactful. Seeing so many people united together—connecting to world and each other. The message of the acts—the mission of the people—it was very inspirational. Another thing, besides facts and rituals, I learned gratitude. It is easy to take little things for granted. We stayed in small huts, sleeping on the mats on the floor. We stayed in the forest, SURROUNDED BY LEECHES! LEECHES!!! But nevertheless, you learn how great life is. How every little thing, from dry socks to drinking water, is a gift. I can honestly say that gratitude is one of the greatest things I learned there. Gratitude for the bed you sleep on, for your family caring for you, for the earth beneath your feet, for the clean crisp breeze. It is amazing this gift of life we have—it may be hard to see sometimes, but it is something to cherish.

A bull elephant we saw on a songthaew in Khao Yai National Park. He was moseying around, doing elephant things. The sight reduced me to tears. Seeing a wild elephant in his home was completely breath-taking!
The monks going on an alms round in the morning. People who had very little give what they could for nothing more than prayers and good karma. The elder, the sick, the crippled, the young, did what they could for the community of monks. It was beautiful.
