This is a Snuffle pad. My girls love it now, especially Scoria, but without a few tips and proper introduction both of my girls would have ignored their snuffle pad completely (originally sold at pet stores for dogs that eat too fast).
First tip, don't just put them directly on it, that is TERRIFYING because that don't know what it is, and the last thing you want is your pet to flee from their toy because their first introduction was very scary.
Instead, put it on a safe surface like your bed and set them down near it in a place they feel safe, like your lap. Let them approach as they feel comfortable. If they don't care at all you can gently make it wiggle dance to get their attention, as long as it is far enough away it won't bonk them or feel threatening. If you use it as in tank supervised enrichment (until they realize it is a toy they might just not want to interact with it) make sure it doesn't block them from getting to their resources if they want to avoid it, just extra precaution after they've been introduced to it to ensure they don't get thirsty/cold as it can be difficult for humans to recognize a snake isn't comfortable with something.
Once they are fine with slithering over it, let them explore it, and investigate it. You might move it inside a large box so there are less interesting things competing for their attention. If you have an energetic hognose, an activity like playing in crinkle paper to wear them out first might be needed- kind of like giving kids recess so they can focus in class later.
There's a strong chance they still won't know what they're supposed to do with this thing. The great thing about hognoses is they can learn from demonstration ESPECIALLY if you've intentionally modeled behavior to teach them before. Only after they feel safe with the object and it is familiar, make sure they can see you and model digging the cheesey hamburger section with your finger like a hoggie would with their rostral scale. I had to demonstrate a few times before Scoria realized what I was instructing and the moment she understood she was having a blast. With the mushroom pepperoni slices, you demonstrate on the toppings, and manually slide the slitherbaby under the cheese. With the ham and pineapple, I supported her body and let her front half dangle down until her head was between two sections and then she started to go to town. I was a little surprised that understanding one snuffle section didn't give understanding to them all.
Scoria is the intellectual wizard, Sakura the barbarian brawler (who is a sweetie like Karlach) and Sakura couldn't focus on it while there were so many other interesting things at for now she gets it as in enclosure enrichment to ponder throughout the day, which has been working because she'll try to interact with it, go think about it, then try again hours later to see what will happen when she tries something else. We'll try again with demonstration in a week to see if she'll snuffle the cheeseborger/pinehample.
This specific pad is "Joyhound Classroom Snuffle Puzzle Mat" from my local PetSmart. But if you are crafty you could make one. The hamburger is literally the fabric from a car wash cloth/glove. I think the ham/cheese is just strips of extra soft felt. So if you're crafty I don't see why you can't make your own snuffle activity mat.
