Irene. That was a nice name. Henry filed it away in his mind before turning to the second part of her response. This part was concerning, especially given her appearance. Young women were particularly vulnerable in places like this. Or at least, they were where he was from.
It’s dangerous? Then why are you here alone?
He probably could have worded it differently, but it would have to do.
Then, one more question as Henry finally processed the very last thing Irene had said.
Awakened? Do you mean that literally or spiritually?
Because if she was part of some weird new-age cult or something, that was gonna be a whole other mess.
“I don’t have anyone else. Not since my father passed away.” She answered simply, her gaze lowering to the ground. Her expression briefly shifted into something more solemn, before changing back into a more neutral one.
Blinking owlishly at his second inquiry, Eirene replied, “Literally. I was put into stasis by my father. I wasn’t awakened until several weeks ago.”
I'm sorry for your loss, Henry signed, unsure if that was the correct reaction to what Irene had said.
Henry glanced around, not noting any threats, and returned his gaze to Irene. She was awfully small and unassuming. How long had she been on her own? How long would it be before something terrible happened to her?
He sighed and rubbed at his temples.
Do you have a camp? he asked. A home base?
Maybe it was presumptuous of him, but Henry really wanted to make sure Irene had at least a fighting chance to survive in this...whatever this cyberpunk dystopia was. And the first step to staying alive was to have somewhere reasonably safe to sleep.
