this passage, to me, is why the thoughts about Katniss in SC’s latest interview don’t work. in this excerpt, Snow does not see Katniss as an annoying girl in a long line of troublemakers from District 12. what’s bothering him is not something as abstract as her desire for freedom. what clearly bothers Snow, and what this statement says to me, is that Snow views Katniss as a complete threat to him in a way he never sees Lucy Gray or Haymitch. she is important enough, and powerful enough, that she requires his entire, explicit focus. it’s not obsession. obsession implies a compulsive or unreasonable emotion, and the concern Snow feels about Katniss is not unreasonable. she has galvanized the districts through her mourning of Rue. she has become a figurehead for a resistence movement. she has in no small part collapsed his regime and stripped him of his power, and the way he dedicates his focus to her makes sense in light of that.

but above all, in this passage, Snow sees Katniss as his equal. he says that they have both been played for fools. Snow is recognizing in this that Katniss has, in fact, been an equal match to him all along. he’s never seen Katniss as the culmination of a line of rabble rousers. she is unique, and she is powerful in her uniqueness. Snow has seen her as in no small part this idea that’s impossible to kill, this teenager that’s somehow impossible for him to outwit. he’s tried to coerce her and it’s failed, he’s tried to outsmart her and it’s failed, but finally, once they’re both bested, that’s when he sees her as a full person. he recognizes that she has been his match, because in his arrogance, the only other person who could be outsmarted by Coin has to be his equal.

The transition from “oh that guy I see you hang around with, your cousin?” -> “that guy who I guess is your boyfriend” -> “that guy I’ve spent a considerable amount of my adolescence distressed about” is peak teenage boy when you consider Katniss barely shared any information about her and Gale. At this point I think Peeta has spent more time thinking about Katniss and Gale than either of them have.

He’s stubborn and logical and can be quit ruthless when he needs to be. He’s perfectionistic and overly self critical and doesn’t seem to like being praised even as being seen as stupid, weak, and lesser are clearly a sore spot and will assign those ideas about himself onto others even with little to no evidence that’s what their thinking. He avoids violence yet can lash out in anger when finally pushed too far. He gets frustrated and stubborn and closes himself off. He’s lonely and isolated and scared and seventeen and every flaw is so completely understandable. But ignoring them diminishes just how wonderful everything else about him is! 

How kind and generous and thoughtful and intelligent he is, how precise and purposeful he is, how respectful and patient. He is hope and gentleness and the calm of the sunset on something better, he’s artistic and creative and nurturing. It wouldn’t matter as much if it didn’t come with negative sides. His kindness wouldn’t be as impactful if he didn’t have to choose it and work for it, kindness is a skill in a lot of ways it’s something that can be practised, kindness is something you choose and he chooses it over and over and over again, he chooses it over anger. His moments of vulnerability and openness wouldn’t mean anything if he was always like that, if it wasn’t earned and if he didn’t try and avoid it. The moments he thaws and comforts wouldn’t mean as much if it was constant, if he didn’t also withdraw and shutdown, if he’s not choosing this. Choosing the right thing over and over again.
