Having Dr Gast be genuinely morally grey (at best) is so interesting. He's Aerith's father, she and Ifalna would've known the best side of him. But with Sephiroth, you could argue he was two-faced. Friendly and kind until he no longer had use for his creation, and left him behind with Hojo, who he NO DOUBT would've been aware was abusive and monstrous in the worst possible way. This makes me think he regarded Sephiroth as just an experiment, a fleeting curiosity, rather than a living being/person. And that's so much more interesting than downplaying his role, his mistakes. Even his approach to science was corrupt, however amicable he may have been in personality. I don't want him to be shown as some irredeemable evil, but I don't want him to just be 'soft scientist who did a small oopsie' either.
