Reno fans I need your help!! I feel like he kinda has a playboy reputation in the fandom but Iâm not really sure what to believe.
I think people sometimes see him as someone who actively seeks out sexual relationships butttt he strikes me as someone who doesnât really care that much about sex maybe? He thinks itâs nice and all that and he is pretty flirty but I donât think itâs so important to him to the point of seeking it out on purpose Yk. And even in a relationship it might not be that important to him. I believe heâs also a lot more emotionally intelligent than ppl give him credit for but thatâs not what Iâm talking about rn anyway lmao
I feel like the playboy image might just come from the way he dresses and carries himself, like how laid back he is if that makes sense. Idk I just wanna know other peopleâs opinions on this

   Weekends were the worst.
That was when the bar housed its rowdiest patrons who stayed far too late, heedless of the bartenders who desperately wanted to get off their aching feet and go home after their hellishly long shifts. Avenyâs one consolation was the extra tips they gathered on weekends. That, and lately they had come to look forward in spite of themself to seeing one particular face among the many regulars. It was that face that wouldnât leave their head, even moreso when he failed to appear at the usual time that Friday.
At first, Aveny didnât think too much of it, brushing off what they told themself was only mild disappointment. But as the evening turned to night a strange sinking feeling began to build inside them, and by the time the crowd had thinned to only those few lingering patrons and the other bartenders began preparing to close up, Aveny could no longer deny that they were worried. They were working off some of their nervous energy polishing the bartop when the head bartender, Emma, approached them. "Almost time to go home! Whew. You know, much as I hate having those Turks in here, I kinda took for granted that they scare off some of the rougher types."
Aveny realized with a start that it was entirely possible that keeping their favorite hangout spot nice and quiet wasn't the Turks' only motivation for protecting the place. "OhâŚI hadn't made the connection, but I guess you're right. They've kinda been like our bodyguards for the past few weeks, huh?"
Emma tittered nervously. "I wouldn't go that far, but kind of, yeah. Anyway, the only thing left to do after these last few drunks leave is bus their tables and lock up. Then we can get out of here."
In a snap decision, Aveny replied, "You guys should split the tips and go home. I'll wait around and close up."
Their coworker looked relieved. "Oh my god, really? Well, you don't have to tell me twice! Aveny, you're the best. Call me if you need anything, alright?"
They nodded, and watched her set off to tell the other two bartenders. It took little time for the three women to split up the tips, Emma returning briefly to bring Aveny their share before clocking out. Surprisingly, it was not long after that the last patron was walking unsteadily out the door, and Aveny was left alone.
Now that it was quiet, they had to contend with their thoughts. It really was strange that after the Turks had been frequenting the bar so consistently, not a single black suit had been seen all night long. Earlier in the night Aveny had been annoyed at themself for thinking too much into it, but now they were only worried. There was one way they could possibly set their mind at ease, the cost of which they'd been weighing all evening. Now they took their phone out of their pocket and barely winced as they opened their contacts list. Would it be the worst or best case scenario to call that number Reno had tried to foist on them a dozen times and hear him crowing in their ear that his incessant pickup lines had finally paid off?
As their thumb hovered over the call button, a banging at the door startled them. A haggard voice called from the other side, âHoney, Iâm home.â
Avenyâs heart leapt. In an instant they were on their feet, fumbling briefly with the lock before flinging open the door. Their relief at the sight of Reno leaning against the doorframe was cut short with the realization that he was covered in cuts, scrapes, and grime. He appeared to have no major injuries, though, so Aveny swallowed hard and asked, âWhat happened? You look like hell.â
He chuckled. âGood to see you, too. Turns out a stun baton doesn't do shit against a Materia Keeper.Â
"Why were you fighting a Materia Keeper?" they couldn't help but ask.Â
Reno shrugged noncommittally. "For work. You still servinâ? I could use a stiff drink.â
They stared incredulously. âYou could use a doctor.â
âNo.â He shook his head. âJust a drink. Maybe two. Or three.â
Aveny ran their hand through their hair. ââŚalright, on the condition that you at least let me patch you up a little. Youâre bleedinâ all over the floor I just mopped.â
His grin was exhausted, but genuine. âFair enough.â
It took no time for Aveny to collect some first aid supplies and pour Reno his drink. They pulled up a chair next to him and scooted as close as possible to get to work. Reno took a long sip first, then sat swirling the cubes in the glass, hardly glancing at Aveny as they prepared an alcohol swab. âThis is gonna sting,â they warned.
He snorted. They considered that as good a go-ahead as any and began gently cleaning the worst of the cuts on his face. Reno didnât react at all, let alone flinch. He just stared at the circling ice in his drink. Eventually, when they finished cleaning all the wounds on the near side of his face, they asked tentatively, âCan I turn your head?â
      âUh huh,â he replied despondently.
However, the instant their fingertips came to light on his jaw, he froze. He offered no resistance as they gently turned his face towards them and brushed his hair back from his forehead to access a gash there. As focused as they were on tending to his injuries, it was some time before they realized his gaze was now fixed on them, his expression uncharacteristically soft.
   Aveny paused their work. âWhat?â
      Reno blinked. âWhat?"
âYouâre staring,â they pointed out. ââŚHow hard did you hit your head?â
That infuriatingly charming smirk of his appeared. âCâmon, Aveny. The line is, âdid it hurt when you fell from heaven?â.â
Aveny rolled their eyes and pursed their lips in an unsuccessful attempt to hide a smile. âIt was a serious question. Do I need to worry you mightâve got a concussion?â
âAwwww, you worry about me?â he purred. âI knew you cared.â
They ducked their head as they fussed with the packaging on a fresh alcohol wipe. âOf course I do,â they said quietly.
At this Reno suddenly fell silent. When Aveny risked a quick glance up at his face, they found his expression something akin to bewilderment. They coughed. âAhem. Reno? Are you gettinâ double vision or ringinâ in your ears or anything?â
âWhat? No.â He looked even more confused.
They tapped their temple. âConcussion,â they reminded him. âI wanna make sure you donât have one.âÂ
Retrieving their phone from their pocket, they activated the flashlight. âLemme test somethinâ really quick.â
Though initially his pupils were dilated, they saw a normal contraction response when they passed the light in front of his eyes. Aveny breathed a sigh of relief. âNothing serious. ButâŚdo me a favor and skip the drinks for now? I think itâd be a lot better for you to have some water instead.â
Reno grinned. âI knew youâd know what tâ do.â
As they retrieved a glass of water for him they asked, only half serious, âIs that why you came here instead of goinâ to an actual doctor?â
Immediately he sobered. Though he fell silent for several moments, his gaze never left them. âSomethinâ like that,â he said at length.Â
They set the glass down in front of him and took their seat again. Wordlessly they resumed cleaning his wounds. For a while there was a somewhat laden silence between them. Aveny sensed Reno wanted to say something, but they did not press him. When he did finally speak, it was in a much quieter tone than usual, and he didnât make eye contact. âI came here âcause IâŚwanted tâ be taken care of, I guess.â Now he looked at them, an unusual softness in his emerald eyes. âSpecifically by you.â
Avenyâs heart swelled until it caught on their ribcage and started to hurt. They ducked their head as a telltale warmth raced across their nose and cheeks up to the tips of their ears. It took them a moment to get their brain and their tongue to cooperate, but they managed to murmur, âWellâŚI donât mind takinâ care of people. So you can come here for that any time you want.â
They didnât dare look up to see his expression, but his relief was evident in his voice. âThanks, Aveny.â
His genuineness gave them the courage to lift their eyes and meet his gaze. Sincerity looked so sweet on him that it made their heart ache again.Â
It was at that moment that a loud pounding at the door again startled Aveny. They jolted against the table hard enough to hurt their knee. Reno was reaching for something hidden at the back of his belt when a familiar voice, polite but direct, called from behind the door, âMx. Aveny?â
Reno slumped back in his chair. âDammit, Rude, weâre in the middle of somethinâ here!â
âNo, weâre not,â Aveny told his partner as they let him in.Â
If they werenât as convincing as they hoped they sounded, there was no indication of disbelief on Rudeâs ever-stoic face. âHas he beenâŚinconveniencing you?â
âNo,â said Reno, at the same time that Aveny said, âYes.âÂ
Rude looked at Reno so sharply that Aveny held their hands up in a placating gesture. âIâm sorry, Iâm kidding, itâs really no trouble.â
While Aveny had yet to see Rude relax, he did seem to appear somewhat less intense upon hearing this. At that point Reno piped up, âSo does that mean I get a kiss to make me better?â
âIâ Get out of my bar,â they spluttered, unable to summon even a hint of vitriol.Â
With a resigned sigh, Reno hauled himself to his feet. âAlright, alright. Thanks again, Aveny.â
âAny time,â they said softly. âI mean it.â
They followed the two Turks to the door. Rude's firm hand on Reno's shoulder ensured the latter exited without further ado, albeit not without further protest. Then Rude turned back to Aveny. "Thank you for looking after him," he said with a nod of his head.
With that, he left, closing the door behind him. Aveny made sure the door was locked, an action performed via muscle memory rather than conscious intent. Then their knees finally gave out and they sank to the floor, where they stayed for a long time.
