Like, you do realize that Jake's a marine, right? It's literally a pretty nice detail about him not being able to let go of that part of his life and also makes sense. Marines are called devil dogs for a reason, just ask the Germans - they gave them that nickname.

Even nicer detail if you remember that in avatar one he introduced himself as a leatherneck to earn the omatikayas trust
