It’s kind of amazing the way people will treat you when you wouldn’t think of treating them that way. But that’s okay. I’ve been throw away before and I will be again.

“YEAH, MOST LIKELY” LIVES RENT FREE IN MY HEAD.
Filipinos are the second-largest Asian population in the US, and yet there are hardly any Filipino restaurants and we have basically zero representation in the media. I’ve always wondered, “Why is that? Why is it that we kind of just disappear into the background of people’s consciousness, when we are so populous?” We are in every part of industry. We basically run the food service in the military. Filipinos are on every single cruise ship. We’re everywhere, and yet we’re nowhere to be seen. When I talk about performance and taking up space and being in public, I’m always coming with that background in mind. I’m claiming space, claiming attention, and claiming my own humanity and presence in that space at that time.

✨Talking about something extremely personal to me this week which is Asian representation and representation in theater in places where we should be visible to an audience and talking about it in the context of my favorite show — Here Lies Love. Would love to continue the discussion here, there, anywhere! Check out my video.

All right, theater kids. It’s been almost a year since everything shut down. I haven’t been to the theater in a whole year and 2021 is looking much like the same. So I’m putting up videos of some of my experiences as a theatergoer. I want to talk about theater, I want to inhale everyone else’s stories, but mostly, just want to connect to people who love what I love. If you’re into that, please like and subscribe to see when new videos come out so we can all flail in comments!

I don’t know where else to put this but two of my favorite -- okay, three of my favorite scenes from Boys in the Band didn’t really show up in the movie but they’re still fresh in my mind. While Michael and Alan are talking upstairs in the bedroom, Larry and Donald are sitting together on the couch and talking and flirting. There was a production still but it was a blink and you’ll miss it moment in the movie.
One of my favorite more subtle moments that said a lot about Hank and Larry’s relationship was when they were sitting on the couch together and Larry would be rubbing Hank’s back or just doing something affectionate and nice and then Hank would pull away suddenly like, “Why is he being nice?” It was abrupt. I loved seeing it, though, because it was just part of that heated back and forth they always seemed to have.
And finally, of course, the final scene where Donald starts to go up the stairs while Hank and Larry are together in the bedroom but then he pauses and sits at the steps. I REALLY MISSED THAT AND I WISH IT WAS IN THE MOVIE. On second viewing, Donald glances up toward the stairs but he stays on the couch.
Okay, I feel better.
‘Race and racism is a reality that so many of us grow up learning to just deal with. But if we ever hope to move past it, it can’t just be on people of color to deal with it. It’s up to all of us – Black, white, everyone – no matter how well-meaning we think we might be, to do the honest, uncomfortable work of rooting it out. It starts with self-examination and listening to those whose lives are different from our own. It ends with justice, compassion, and empathy that manifests in our lives and on our streets.’ — Michelle Obama
