shen jiu with weird arms for my friend đĽ°
ig suggestions: sqq meets lbhâs moms (plural)!!!
Hello yâall đź Let me glaze this fic I LOVE IT SO MUCH ITS SO PEAK!!! @particle90272 Thank you for writing this fic I am so proud to have the ability to draw it and I will continue to post more fanart in the future so look forward to more!đđđŤś
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Xie lian x Shen Qingqiu (yuan)??
I've been thinking Shen Qingqiu has a few similarities to Hua Cheng. Both died like 3 times for their loved one, if it meant their loved ones happiness, they would let their love date someone else (sqq w the 'harem'), both enjoy the arts, and are devoted to their loved one (sqq being #1 lbh fan)
What if Sqq met Xie lian and transmigrated into tgcf instead? Sqq likes a sensitive heart w a misunderstood past. He likes a beautiful man whose a 1 man army (Xie Lian is ridiculously overpowered even when nerfed). Sqq is even the type of person to always choose his loved one again and again, somwthing Xie Lian definitely appreciates.
I feel like Xie Lian could fall for Sqq's persona. Sqq is aloof and hard to read, but as you get to know him its like a glacier beauty melting, inviting you into her warm embrace. Xie Lian would have fun finding out the person behind the aloof mask and when he finally cracks out a gentle smile from Sqq, it's like time freezes.
They would also make the most ridiculous couple. I feel like Xie Lian would find Shen Qingqiu a very funny and interesting person. And it would be a very slow burn between the two bc both are forcefully oblivious people.
What would their ship name be?? Lianyuan? Theres Cumplane so maybe Trashcu-
Uhh, ship name in progress.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/71174931

been thinking about sy!sqq and nyy
DRAGONS TAKE OVER MY MIND⌠SVSSS MODERN AU WHERE DRAGONS ARE SUPER COMMON AND ARE TREATED LIKE STRAY CATS.
All of the CQMS peak lords are different breeds of dragons that frequent a specific area. It just so happens that SY is the like⌠dragon control guy that handles dragon sightings in the area.
Now, not all dragons are the same size, and not all of them have the same anatomyâŚ. SO YOU HAVE SCENES OF LARGE WIND DRAGON SJ DECIDING TO NAP AND SUNBATHE IN THE MIDDLE OF A ROAD. HE TAKES UP THE ENTIRE STREET AND WONâT MOVEâEVEN SNAPPING AT ANYBODY THAT GETS CLOSE.
SY, who is familiar with this dragon (he feeds it on occasion and once helped treat its injury) is called and heâs just so tired when he walks up. Heâs pinching the bridge of his nose and trying to keep his voice calm as he tells SJ politely that âyou cannot nap here.â This of course quickly turns into a screaming match between man and dragon where SJ lets out a loud screech and storms off, knocking streetlights askew as he leaves. It doesnât cause any harm, but itâs enough of an inconvenience for SY that SJ feels like heâs won.
Water dragon/Serpent Liu Qingge who keeps entering grocery stores to get misted in the vegetable section. Itâs unsanitary and he keeps eating the produce there and nobody can get him out. Of course SY is called and after a back and forth they have to bring a fire truck over to hose LQG down in what LQG considers an epic battle. Of course this wrecks the supermarket a bit but LQG stops going there in favor of appearing at ungodly hours of the day to challenge fire trucks to fights.
HUGE earth dragon YQY that disrupts the city life every time he rises on his hind legs to check the rooftops of nearby buildings for SJ. He keeps stepping on things and breaking things in his search for the wind dragon. Thankfully YQY is much more agreeable than SJ and accepts the compromise of âAsking around, rather than searching on his own. This brings us scenes of YQY wanting to start searching for his wayward dragon but remembering that he shouldnât be so destructive so instead he peers into a building with a large eye and lets out the most polite âtrillâ he can muster. (Itâs like a deep growl thing). It takes the locals a few months to get used to this, and when they do they always laugh and tell YQY to hold on while they check their local areas dragon watch website before pointing him in the right direction.
Plant dragon MQF (an earth dragon subspecies) that is very interested in hospitals and often peers in through windows just to watch things happen. He doesnât do it often and likes to imitate whatever he sees on wild specimen. Heâs less of a problem than the others, it only becomes a problem when spring comes around because then heâs warding patients away from the hospital because itâs his territory. Each time SY is called over and usually taken hostage, where heâll offer MQF some type of snack and sedate him. In reality MQF is aware of the sedatives and kicks up a fuss for the sole purpose of building an immunity before beginning to replicate it through his magical plant powers. He hasnât managed to do it yet but still⌠Clever fucking dragon.
Fire dragon WQW that keeps building his nests in Home Depotâs. It happens way too often. The only solution SYâs found is temporary relocations, but those usually donât last long. The longest relocation they managed to do was putting the dragon in a glass blowing facility. The only reason it didnât work out is because the place shut down after a while, theyâd been going out of business anyways. All SY can do is scold WQW away and call it a day knowing that heâll (WQW) inevitable come back in like a few months.
Fellow wind dragon QQQ who likes to lounge around in places where she shouldnât be. Sheâs taken interest in kites and has been frequently harassing this shop ownerââs ex boyfriend. Yeah, sheâs a dragon with a grudge. QQQ, lover of pretty things, is quite fond of a shop owner that makes kites that resemble her. Sheâs always amazed by the likeness and prideful at how her beauty is being appreciated. When the shop owner temporarily shut down because she got screwed over by her cheating scumbag ex boyfriend, QQQ somehow connected the dots and has started terrorizing him⌠literally, sheâs not playing she is actively hunting him. SYâs glad she hasnât been able to get to him yet, otherwise thereâd be a whole mess and then the city might try to get rid of her and itâd be this entire hassle (one that heâs already been through). Unlike SJ, when SY explains that if she kills the evil ex she wonât be able to stay and her beloved kite maker will get in trouble as well, she seems to catch the memo and backs off. (SJâs evil ass is a casual killer of humans and often hunts poachers for sport. No matter how elegant he looks he how patient he is with civilians, SJ is actually quite cruel.)
SYâs only basis of fighting the city on witchunting SJ is that SJâs only been going after poachers (a lie heâs eaten a few civilians too but what SY doesnât know wonât hurt him) and that he hasnât caused actual harm to the city besides a few minor inconveniences. SYâs just lucky that the city needs his expertise and canât afford to lose him when heâs so familiar with the dragons.
SQH is a bit of a mixed bag because he sometimes just leaves the area of SYâs jurisdiction. When heâs in SYâs area though heâs not a major issue, if anything he seems to just bully the lower dragons in some sort of weird stress relief. (Heâs bullying as a result of MBJ bullying him wwwwww)
NYY, a cloud dragon, (crossbreed of a wind dragon and a water dragon) is actually the least troublesome, all she does is follow SJ around and occasionally take a dip in hotel pools with LMY, a water dragon/serpent just like her brother. The only issue is when SHL comes to SYâs area to play with the two. SHL is a troublemaker through and through.
In another city XF also has dragons (as well and another thing) he has to deal with.
He has a temperamental ice dragon (MBJ), a furry,,, pining crossbreed (LBJ, whoâs a cross between a fenrir and a dragon), a two-faced earth dragon (SQH), a raging runaway lesbian dragon that can never sit still (SHL), a wild fenrir that is ALWAYS DOING SOME BULLSHIT (TLJ), and a wild serpent thatâs halfway there to becoming a dragon (ZZL)

What if Shen Yuan, instead of being trasmigrated into Shen Qingqiu, was reborn into an infant much earlier in the timeline of PIDW?
In the spring of the same year as Shen Jiu is born, Shen Yuan wakes up as the infant son of an Army General.
He hates it. Infants have no dignity, and new layers of Shen Yuan's already thin face shave off with every diaper change and feeding. So! To stave off the growing cracks in his mental state, he starts focusing on the world around him.
As an infant, he figures he must be in some hacks half-assed historical fantasy or something. At three years of age, he decides that, more likely, it's some sort of Wuxia-Xianxia mix with an emphasis on...well, he's not entirely sure, but there's a lot of hidden politics his military family has to deal with, so. Maybe it's something like Game of Thrones?
It isn't until heâs started being taught military strategy and how to read that he starts seeing familiar names. After all, what are the chances of all four Cultivation Clans of PIDW being named in one book?
So.
So...
Yeah, no. Shen Yuan loses his shit.
Some time later (much, much later), Shen Yuan has the wherewithal to start scouting around. The good news is, he's several years away from the start of PIDW's plot, and even more before he would have to worrying about the Realms Merger Luo Binghe would wrought upon them all.
The bad news is that he may not even have to worry about any of that; because while the land Shen Yuan's family currently lives on is at peace, it's tentative at best, and Shen Yuan is next in line to be General of the Nation's army.
--
Many years later, Luo Binghe is ten years old, slowly traveling from town to town on his way to Cang Qiong Mountain Sect, when he meets what he would later realize is the love of his life.
Walking a well-used path between towns, his bad luck had caught up with him when a young master in a carriage took exception to the sight of him and, as young masters always did, decided to harass and bully the poor defenseless child in their sight line. Lou Binghe was just starting to regret ever being born when he hears the sounds of hoof beats catching up to their position.
"Make way!" A stern voice shouts. "Make way for the Army!"
The young master's party tries, but their master is prideful and a fool, and thus refuses. It turns out the young master is of some higher rank (with nothing better to do than cause trouble) and so the moment he is told to move, he digs his feet in. A confrontation starts.
Binghe tries to subtly scuttle away, but he's grabbed before he can go far and thrown to the ground between the two parties- used as a scapegoat for why the young master is being so obstinate. He knows- from years of watching servants take the fall- that the next few minutes are likely to hurt real bad.
But then the clouds part, and under a ray of gentle light, a voice calls out amongst the army men. Binghe dares glance up, just in time to see the rugged men part for another man on horseback.
He's different from the others. Oh, he had the build, the armor, and his hair was tied up tight in a bun, making him seemingly indistinguishable from the others, but there was something there that called all eyes to him. A silent assurance, or maybe just a quiet gravity.
Binghe feels himself fill with cautious awe.
"Why have we stopped? What is the issue?"
"Apparently this child is blocking the road." The leading soldier informed.
"That's right, this little runt refused to move for his superiors! The Master will not be moving until some proper respect is beaten into him!"
The man on horseback turns to him then. All awe dies. Binghe's heart sinks. There is a cold analysis in that gaze, and-
No. No, wait. Even as Binghe's heart fell...did those eyes gain a hint of warmth?
"I see." The man speaks. "So a single lost child is enough to ruffle the young master's feathers like this? How great your house must have fallen, that it cannot ignore a single slight from an orphaned boy."
The young master seethes, "You-!"
The man turns to the leading soldiers, cutting him off with a swift order- "Move Them," -then in a smooth, well-practiced move, swings off his horse and lands in the dirt with a gentle, heavy thud.
Binghe watches him with eyes wide- and getting wider as he approaches Binghe's kneeling self and drops to bended knee right in front of him.
"You've found some trouble, child."
Ah! A scolding! Binghe's cheeks flush with shame, his wide stare dropping to his hands. "This lowly one is sorry! This lowly one did not mean to cause trouble for you-"
"Stop. I'm not criticizing you." A warm hand lands on his head, and Binghe nearly gasps aloud. "What's your name? Where are you going?" A small pause. "You've been injured; let me bandage that for you."
For the next little while, Binghe basks in the care of a total stranger. He tells his name, his life story, and for the first time since his mother's death, feels as if he is really and truly being seen.
"Cang Qiong, huh?" The man, plain and indistinguishable from any other soldier at first appearance- oh, but Binghe will never forget his face now. He stares at the man's features as long as he dares, determined to memorize every line and scar and out of place strand of hair. "I can't take you all the way there, but if you don't mind sharing a horse and promise to hide if trouble comes knocking, I see no reason we can't take you a town close by."
Forget memories, he needs to know this man's name now!!
--
He shares a horse with the man (Shen Yuan!). Others offer, but for the second time in Binghe's life, he dares to hide behind someone's legs and clings to the man's pants. (It was entirely impulse, and he scolded himself for it viciously, but Shen Yuan- proving Binghe's mother right that there are kind people in the world still- laughed. Laughed!)
Binghe had never ridden a horse before, but Shen Yuan was so kind. He taught him how to get on, helped him up the entire way, guided him on the best way to sit and hold the resigns; and when Shen Yuan climbed up himself, Binghe didn't feel nervous about their closeness at all.
In fact, an hour into the ride, Binghe fell into a light doze. He couldn't help it. Shen Yuan was warm and sturdy, and Binghe was small and tired. It was bound to happen, and he only woke up when new sounds reached his ears.
When camp was made, Shen Yuan shared his food with him. When it was time to sleep, he didn't mind that Binghe clung to his side and refused to go anywhere else. When Binghe got scared to relieve himself in the forest at night, Shen Yuan would sigh, pat his head, and say "Alright, I'll go with you. But only the once, got it?" And Binghe would happily agree; but by that point they both knew if Binghe asked, Shen Yuan would indulge him. A week of this, and even the other soldiers would tease them for becoming "father and child on the way to war."
Traveling through towns was the best, though. Shen Yuan told the best stories, and when he saw things in the markets or food in the stalls, he would point at them and tell Binghe stories of "that time I ripped some drunk a new one for messing with a girl," and "when I was younger I accidentally broke my mother's prized necklace and spent the next month trying to hide it from her."
They couldn't really stop in town, but at one point Shen Yuan decided to wait until they'd made camp and eaten before taking Binghe on the speediest ride back into town of his life- and all to get him a bath and change of clothes.
A bath! A warm, clean bath! And he wasn't weird about it at all, like some of the street kids told him adults could be! He even bought Binghe's new clothes with his own personal coin! (It wasn't new, and the colors were a little faded, but it was clean and sturdy and bought just a little bigger than Binghe's size- but most importantly, it was His! His, and a gift from the man who was quickly becoming his favorite person!)
All in all, Binghe- oh, Binghe didn't want to leave Shen Yuan at all!
And then he overheard it.
It was a town close to Binghe's last shared destination with Shen Yuan. The townsfolk were quieter there, and when they saw the soldiers, they all murmured and stared as they passed, quiet and solemn. Like the wake of a funeral.
Binghe tentatively called up to Shen Yuan, unnerved.
"Hm?" He followed Binghe's eyes, sighed, and pat his head. "Don't worry, Binghe. They're just worried."
Later in camp, Binghe asked more about it; and that's when he learned what an Army was. Really learned.
"You could die?"
The firelight made odd shadows on Shen Yuan's face, but for a second Binghe thought he saw somberness settle there.
"That's right."
"Why?" Binghe asked- and he knew he shouldn't, but a new fear had grown in him and the image of Shen Yuan cold and still on a battlefield, injured so bad he died, all alone without Binghe there to help- oh, it made his little heart tremble and made his eyes burn with tears.
"Orders from our dearest Emperor," another soldier chimed in, poking their fire with a stick. Shen Yuan called his name in a scolding tone, but another soldier cut in just as quickly.
"You see, the mortal realm's Emperor decided fighting with our neighbors was better than brokering peace."
Shen Yuan tried to scold him too, but Binghe beat him to it with another "Why?"
"Enough. Binghe does not need to hear-"
Another man- one that spoke to Shen Yuan frequently with information and questions- stepped in then. "Captain, he of all people needs to hear. You'll be parting soon, doesn't he have the right to know why you might not meet again?"
And Binghe learned. He learned that the current Emperor of the mortal realm was recently instated. That he was young and tyrannical and bore no insult, no matter if insult was meant or had ever existed in the first place. Executions were plentiful, relations with old neighboring allies were failing, negotiations with opposing neighbors were falling apart, and in fact the only person here in this camp that had come out of any sort of willingness was Shen Yuan, as the son of a General. The others had been enlisted very much against their will with little expectation to make it out alive, let alone gain anything from their misery.
Why? Because the Emperor had perceived insult from an envoy negotiating peace, had them locked up, and when the country they came from refused to apologize for some imagined slight, the Emperor had lost it and had the envoy executed before the whole capital.
Binghe had never hated someone before, but now, knowing that it would be on this man's orders that his Shen Yuan could die...
"Let me come with you."
The soldiers laughed at him. It wasn't mean-spirited, just sad and knowing, and Binghe understood even if he didn't like it. What would a ten year old do on the battlefield? Die, that's what.
Shen Yuan pulled him over into his arms before Binghe could really start crying, sitting him in his lap and rocking him side to side.
"It'll be alright. Even if I do die, I won't go."
"You won't?" Binghe hiccups into his chest. His small arms cling to Shen Yuan's sides, and Shen Yuan holds him almost exactly how his mama used to.
"Of course not. Binghe wants me to stay, so how could I die?"
There's a smattering of laughs behind him, and Binghe pouts. "Don't joke!"
"Not joking, not joking," Shen Yuan soothes with lightness in his voice- definitely laughing then! "I'm very serious. The most serious. Binghe doesn't want me to go, so even if I die, I'll stay and wait for Binghe to find me; how does that sound?'
Binghe sniffles, "Sounds good."
"Good. Then it's a deal: as long as Binghe wants me, I won't move on to the next life. I'll wait right where I fell, I promise."
Binghe would prefer a promise to live, but even he knew that wasn't one a person could keep. Atleast this way, even if Shen Yuan wasn't alive, Binghe could still keep him. Maybe...maybe he could even find a way to bring him back? If cultivation magic was real and demons walked amongst mortals, then why not bringing back the dead?
--
Their parting isn't happy in that final town. Everyone knew Binghe had to go. Binghe knew he had to go. Yet, when Binghe looked up at Shen Yuan, he could see the soldier struggling with himself. His hold on Binghe's hand was firm, and it tightened when Binghe adjusted his hand inside it before finally letting go.
Just like the first time they met, Shen Yuan moves to kneel before him.
"You'll be safe? Stay out of trouble? Cang Qiong isn't far; if you're scared, I can take you the rest of the way..."
Binghe shakes his head. "You can't. The Emperor won't like it."
Shen Yuan purses his lips. Binghe likes to think he knows the man very well now, and so he swears he can almost hear Shen Yuan say "Damn the Emperor!" in his mind. It makes him smile.
The soldier moves on. "Food then? Water? Do you have enough? Should I give you coin for an Inn? A bath might be good if you want to make a good first impression on Cang Qiong."
"The boy will be fine, Captain. You've given him everything he'll need. If you give anymore, you'll end up giving him half our supplies and go broke."
Binghe and Yuan both pout at the man: Binghe, for interrupting their goodbye, and Shen Yuan for denying his need to care for (spoil) Binghe with his Logic. Still, the logic was sound. Binghe had to convince Shen Yuan not to give him his entire coin pouch as a parting gift.
(Binghe loves this man. He's too young to know what kind of love it is at the moment, but when he's fifteen and discovering the existence of romance for the first time, he'll think back on these long weeks with Shen Yuan and Know.)
It takes awhile for Shen Yuan to drag himself away. Binghe doesn't even try to put distance between them, watching Shen Yuan mount his horse like- like a man off to war.
The procession leaves slowly, each soldier yelling out their own farwell as they pass. Binghe waves to them as they call, but his eyes cling to Shen Yuan, not wanting to miss a second.
Shen Yuan glances back frequently over his shoulder. Their eyes meet more than once, and each time Binghe feels a jolt in his heart. Will Shen Yuan turn around? Will he take him with him after all?
He never does. Eventually the soldiers take a turn on the path and disappear behind the trees.
Alone, Binghe makes his way to Cang Qiong Mountain.
--
There's a phrase he hears on Qing Jing that doesn't quite process until heâs knee deep in the demon realm, amassing power at an alarming rate: "A General must follow an Emperor."
Now, sitting on a throne under the roof of a Palance that belongs solely to him, he thinks, "If Shen Yuan must swear fealty, let it be to someone who will never send him to his death pointlessly- or send him to his death at all."
A little bit of Meiyuan for @amasamay , who's also my tgcf wifeyy

Mei Nianqing x Shen Yuan
______________________________
Heart Fluttering
______________________________
(After the battle)
Mei Nianqing had been working with Zhi Ming on bringing Shen Yuan back, and the whole thing was giving him a headache that no amount of spiritual energy was going to fix.
That little idiot had gone and done self-destruction without any warning whatsoever, like he hadnât stopped for even a second to think about what that would do to the people left standing there watching it happen. Like he hadnât considered that some of them might actually care.
âThat little shit,â Mei Nianqing grumbled under his breath, carefully carving out the eyes of the puppet while Zhi Ming watched from the side with his tiny arms crossed. The problem with Zhi Ming being a small statue was that there were certain places on the puppet he simply couldnât reach no matter how determined he was, and determination alone did not give you longer arms. So Mei Nianqing had volunteered himself to fill the gap, and here they were.
Working together, the two of them had constructed a puppet. It wasnât perfect by any measure. The proportions were a little off in places, the carving on the hands was slightly uneven, and there was one section along the jaw that Mei Nianqing had redone three times and still wasnât entirely happy with. But if you stood back and looked at it without being too harsh about the details, you could tell who it was supposed to be. The resemblance was there. Anyone who had met Shen Yuan would recognize it within the first few seconds, provided they had the decency to overlook some of the rougher spots.
They had been working on this puppet for nearly a year. A whole year, while the heavenly realm slowly pieced itself back together around them, brick by brick and prayer by prayer. And Jun Wu? Still exactly where they had left him, pinned to the ground deep inside the cave, Fangxin buried in his stomach, motionless and silent. They worked in the ten thousand god statues cave, surrounded by all those stone faces looking down at them from every direction, which was a strange kind of company but the only kind available.
âZhi Ming, I think itâs enough.â Mei Nianqing stepped back and looked at the finished puppet, then looked at the little statue perched on the large rock nearby, waiting. He tilted his head slightly, assessed the work one more time, and decided that spending another month refining the carving would not actually improve their odds of success. Enough was enough.
Zhi Ming nodded and immediately reached for a piece of paper, scribbling something down. His handwriting was genuinely terrible, the kind of handwriting that made you feel a little sorry for whoever had to read it, but Mei Nianqing kept that opinion to himself. Given that Zhi Ming was working with hands the size of a childâs thumb and had been a small stone figurine for longer than either of them probably wanted to think about, complaining about penmanship felt like it was missing the point.
The note said: 'Letâs draw the array now.'
Mei Nianqing nodded. He lifted the puppet carefully and carried it out of the cave, moving through the dark passage and out into the open air, where there was enough room to work. Then, with Zhi Ming directing from his shoulder and pointing his tiny arm here and there with surprising authority, Mei Nianqing drew the array out on the ground, checking the lines twice before settling the puppet into the center of it.
After that, they sat down together and began the summoning.
Calling a soul back was not a fast process. It required patience, and stillness, and the kind of quiet focus that made time feel like it was moving through something thick. They stayed in the same position for what felt like a very long time, the only sounds around them the wind and the distant settling of stone. The puppet didnât move. Didnât so much as tremble. Mei Nianqing found himself going through the array step by step in his head, checking for anything he might have drawn wrong, any character out of place, any line that curved when it should have been straight.
He was still working through the fourth section in his head when something small and urgent tugged at his sleeve.
He looked down. Zhi Ming was pointing at the puppet with one tiny arm, the other hand gripping Mei Nianqingâs sleeve tightly, like he was trying to make absolutely sure he was paying attention.
The puppetâs finger had moved.
Just one finger. Just a small, almost imperceptible twitch. But it was movement. Real movement, not a trick of the light or a settling of the wood.
Something in Mei Nianqingâs chest unknotted itself all at once, a relief so immediate and physical that he had to take a slow breath to steady himself. He still wasnât certain yet. A soul had entered the puppet, yes, but that didnât automatically mean it was the right soul. Summoning was not an exact process, and the last thing he wanted was to declare success only to discover they had pulled in the wrong spirit entirely.
So he waited. And the puppet continued to move, slowly, like someone waking up in stages from a very deep and disorienting sleep. Fingers first, then hands, then the slow lift of the head.
Eventually, the puppet stood up.
Mei Nianqing got to his feet and approached carefully, Zhi Ming climbing up to his shoulder and gripping the fabric of his collar with both tiny hands, leaning forward to look. He stopped when there was a reasonable distance between them and looked at the puppet directly.
âWho are you?â he asked, keeping his voice level.
The puppet blinked. Then it looked down at itself, slowly, like it was taking inventory. Both hands came up and it touched its own face, its arms, its chest, turning its palms over and looking at them from both sides, the expression on the carved face doing something complicated and wondering, like someone who had been told they were going to wake up somewhere unfamiliar and was still surprised to actually find themselves there.
It couldnât speak, of course. The puppet had no voice to offer. But Mei Nianqing had already thought of that, and he held out a piece of paper and a brush.
The puppet took them without hesitation, steadied the paper against its knee, and wrote. Then it turned the paper around to show him.
'Shen Yuan'
Mei Nianqing looked at it. Then looked at the puppet. He appreciated the directness but one name was not sufficient evidence, so he kept his expression neutral and waited.
The puppet seemed to understand that, because it immediately started writing again, filling the rest of the paper with more, writing about the fusion, about things that would only be known to someone who had actually lived through those events, and then pointing at Zhi Ming on Mei Nianqingâs shoulder with clear recognition in its carved eyes.
Zhi Ming gave a small, solemn nod in return.

Mei Nianqing read the paper through to the end. Then he let out a long breath and said, âOkay. Youâre really him.â
Zhi Ming, from his shoulder, looked insufferably satisfied about all of this.
Some months passed since the day Shen Yuan had come back, living now inside the puppet that Mei Nianqing and Zhi Ming had spent a year putting together.
It was fine. Everything was fine. The work was done, the result was good, and life in and around the cave had settled into something with a rhythm to it. Mei Nianqing told himself regularly that everything was completely fine, and he almost always believed himself.
Except for the thing with his heart.
He had started noticing it somewhere around the time Shen Yuan had helped him with the cards. That particular afternoon, Shen Yuan had leaned in close without any warning, close enough that Mei Nianqing could have reached out and touched him, pointing at the hand of cards and explaining in his fast, casual way which one to choose and why. And Mei Nianqing had just⌠stopped. Gone completely still, his mind wiped clean of every thought he had been in the middle of, because his heart had done something loud and sudden in his chest that he had absolutely no framework for.
He was not a person who was unfamiliar with his own body. He had been alive for a very long time. He had felt pain, and grief, and satisfaction, and the quiet exhaustion that came from carrying too much for too long. He knew what those things felt like.
He did not know what this was.
And it kept happening. That was the part he found most difficult to deal with. It wasnât a one-time thing. Every time Shen Yuan looked at him, just looked, just turned his head in his direction and met his eyes, even for a moment, Mei Nianqingâs heart did that thing again. Loud and insistent and completely unhelpful. He would catch Shen Yuan mid-thought, that little private snicker on his face that appeared when he was turning something funny over in his head, or watch the way he moved when he was talking about something he actually cared about, and his chest would react before he had any chance to tell it not to.
It was deeply inconvenient.
And Zhi Ming knew. That little shit was becoming impossible to ignore. The small statue had started producing little drawings, quick rough sketches on scraps of paper that he would wave in Mei Nianqingâs direction at whatever moment he calculated would be most effective. Every single one of them was of Shen Yuan. Shen Yuan sitting. Shen Yuan laughing. Shen Yuan doing absolutely nothing remarkable except existing, which Zhi Ming had apparently decided was portrait-worthy.
He was so annoying. He was also the only one who seemed to understand what was going on, which made him simultaneously the most irritating and most useful person in Mei Nianqingâs immediate vicinity.
Mei Nianqing was not going to ask him about it. He had some dignity.
Zhi Ming had also started engineering situations. Little ones, subtle enough that if you werenât paying attention you might have missed the pattern. He would grip Shen Yuanâs clothes with his tiny hands and lead him somewhere with whatever excuse he had decided was plausible that day, which usually earned him a sideways, suspicious look from Shen Yuan but not actually enough resistance to stop him. And somehow, almost every time, wherever Zhi Ming had decided to lead Shen Yuan happened to be wherever Mei Nianqing was.
The drawings kept appearing. The leading kept happening. Mei Nianqing kept pretending not to notice the pattern, which was getting harder to do convincingly with every passing week.
Then came the afternoon when the pattern produced a result that none of them had quite planned for.
Mei Nianqing was sitting on the ground, a scroll across his lap, working through it in the quiet way he did when he was actually concentrating and didnât want to be interrupted. He heard Zhi Ming arrive first, the familiar tiny footsteps, and then the slightly more reluctant footsteps of Shen Yuan behind him, and he didnât look up, because if he looked up it would only encourage Zhi Ming.
He didnât hear exactly what happened next. There was a sound, sort of a surprised intake of breath, and then something happened in the space between one moment and the next, and Shen Yuan was in his lap.
Mei Nianqing had never, in the full length of his life, had occasion to compare the heat of his own face to volcanic activity. He was now reconsidering that gap in his experience, because what was happening to his face in this moment suggested that the comparison was not as hyperbolic as it might have sounded. He was certain his face was producing visible warmth. He was at least ninety percent sure he was going to combust.
Shen Yuan had gone completely rigid. His face was red, deeply and thoroughly red, and his eyes had taken on the quality of someone whose soul had departed their body to seek calmer accommodations elsewhere. He wasnât moving. He wasnât speaking. He wasnât even appearing to breathe. He was just⌠there, sitting in Mei Nianqingâs lap, absent from the physical world.
Zhi Ming, from somewhere to the left, looked like he had just witnessed the single greatest achievement of his entire existence.
Mei Nianqing shot him a look that communicated quite clearly that he could keep his feelings to himself. Zhi Ming shrugged one tiny shoulder with the energy of someone who had absolutely nothing to apologize for, and then walked off in the direction of the deeper part of the cave, which was an impressively casual exit.
Mei Nianqing cleared his throat. Nothing happened. Shen Yuan was still somewhere else entirely, floating in whatever internal space he had retreated to.
âShen Yuan.â He reached out and shook the puppetâs shoulder, once, gently.
Shen Yuan snapped back into himself with a start, blinking rapidly, and then processed the situation he was in and immediately began trying to get up. He was apologizing or atleast trying to apologise, scrambling to move, but the scrambling somehow produced exactly the wrong result, and instead of creating distance it closed it.
Their lips touched.
It was barely anything. A brush, a fraction of a second, the softest and most accidental contact. And then Shen Yuan went backward off his lap with a startled, landing on the ground, one hand flying up to cover his mouth, eyes wide enough that they seemed to take up most of his face.
He scrambled to his knees, then his feet, and then he was gone, moving out of the cave at a speed that could only be described as fleeing, the sound of his footsteps disappearing quickly into open air.
Mei Nianqing sat very still on the ground where he had been sitting before any of this happened. His scroll was still in his hands. He hadnât moved it. He looked down at it for a moment without reading a single character.
Then, slowly, almost without deciding to, he raised one hand and touched his own lips.
The warmth that had been in his face was still there, settled in deep now, not fading the way it should. And under his hand, where his ribs enclosed his heart, that same loud, insistent, entirely-impossible-to-ignore thumping was going again.
He lowered his hand. He looked at the empty cave entrance where Shen Yuan had disappeared.
He thought, âWhat am I going to do now?â, as he placed his hand on his chest and had absolutely no answer for himself. Just the warmth, and the quiet, and his heart doing whatever it wanted without his permission.
