It was well in the afternoon when you had wandered to falcon coast, the fresh waves that the ocean provided gave you a sense of comfort, the light breeze of salt wafting through the air. You had been commissioned to pick out mist flowers, however you would’ve denied the request if you’d known that you would be picking the blue flowers instead of the red ones.
Spotting a familiar eye patched man standing along the shore of the ocean, you notice two kids accompanying him. “Kaeya?” His head turned your way, his hands filled with seashells and he looked at you with a cheeky smile.
“I’d like to think that the calvary captain would be spending his free time doing something, other than picking seashells with some kids.” You tease the man, but he only laughs at your words.
“It’s a family tradition.” He smiles watching the two kids run off to a different area. “What are you doing here in falcon coast?” Kaeya puts the seashells in a basket and cleans the sand off of his hands.
“Finishing up a commission.” You pulled your basket up to show him the flowers ice fragments still on the core, “my fingers are frozen now.” Kaeya lets out a chuckle “Blame the Chief Alchemist for wanting to use cryo mist flowers. His chuckle dies down as he glances back at the kids. “While you’re out here.. do you think you can fit in another commission?” You eye him suspiciously and he grins back.
“It’s getting late and there isn’t an adult to accompany Jill and Will back home, do you mind?” The confusion on your face is evident because Kaeya continues speaking, “I have a meeting with Diluc at the Winery and I don’t have time to stop by the city.” With crossed arms you exhale softly. “Alright, i’ll take them home.”
There’s a small smile on his face as he waves to the kids and he promptly walks away. Kaeya is on the front steps of Dawn Winery where he is welcomed inside by Adelinde, he finds Diluc in his bedroom dressed in his red attire with his hair pulled up into a high ponytail, the two don’t say anything until the silence is broken when Kaeya clears his throat.
“If I remembered correctly, I do believe I saw y/n picking cryo mist flowers near the winery earlier this morning.” Diluc moves his gaze up and stares at the man through the mirror, “and why should this concern me Kaeya?”
“Don’t you think it’s a bit concerning that a visionless citizen is doing a commission that requires a pyro user.” There’s a glint of playfulness in his words as he watches Diluc slip his gloves on, and he continues talking crossing his arms together.
“It just so happened that I was chatting with y/n earlier at falcon coast, just before arriving here. There seems to be a fair amount of mist flowers over there no? you know, the ones near the cave.” Kaeya shrugs his shoulders with a dramatic sigh, “but I could be wrong, after all it is getting late, for all I know, y/n could be home by now.”
Diluc doesn’t say anything as he throws his mask over his face, his eyes locked on the mirror in front of him watching kaeya’s figure that once was leaning on the doorframe slowly disappear into the hallway.
“I’ll see you later brother, do make sure to check on y/n though.”
When Diluc arrives to falcon coast the sky is already painted red and orange, Kaeya’s words are lingering in his mind and he decides to do a quick search around the area just incase you did decide to come back. His steps are careful as he walks over to the cave noticing that the mist flowers are still there.
The lightness in your arms did not dwell on you until you waved goodbye at the two kids and one of them pointed at you with her head tilted to the side.
“Weren’t you carrying a basket of mist flowers and seashells?”
You were sure you had carried your basket with you but when you looked there was nothing but the lingering feeling of cold mist from the flowers. With a sheepish smile you nod at the girl. “Thank you for reminding me, i’ll make sure to keep the seashells safe.”
With reluctant steps you trudged back to falcon coast the moon was blooming and night had finally settled in when you arrived, you spotted your basket resting peacefully on the grey stone.
Picking the brown basket up you noticed two mist flowers a few feet away from you. It should’ve taken you only a few seconds to get the flowers and finally leave, but the splashes of orange flickering in the cave a few feet away had piqued your interest. Holding your basket a bit tighter you walked closer to the cave the soft sand helping reduce the sounds of your footsteps.
The inside of the cave felt warmer the further you continue your steps, the light from the fire had now been reflecting off your face, voices are heard deeper within the cave and much to your surprise the familiar gruffness of a fatui is heard the more you continue dragging your feet.
You freeze in your tracks the moment your eyes lay on the conference table, the light is more prominent now and the faces in the cave are much more recognizable. There are a few fatui members at one end of the table but you aren't able to tell who’s at the other end.
Their voices are clear as day to your ears but nobody seems to notice your appearance, in an attempt to save yourself you shifted your body back, but unfortunately for you the sound of seashells clashing together had made the stares of the fatui shift your way.
The world felt as if it stopped when the eyes of a hydro skirmisher had locked with yours, the words of the fatui went deaf on your ears as you stood frozen in fear, you felt your heart dropping to the pit of your stomach when a pyro skirmisher held up his weapon, you didn’t waste anytime running from the group, legs moving on their own trying to find a way back outside, however searching for an exit was almost impossible.
The orange flint of fire that was the only source of light had become more dim the further you ran, eventually your steps had slowed down to a walk but came to a complete stop when you heard quick agile footsteps behind you.
You were sure your heart stopped for a moment when you felt someone touch your shoulder from behind, a rough hand had cupped around your mouth refraining your scream. The hand that’s cupping your mouth leaves when you calm down and the stranger puts his index finger to his lips mouthing a quiet “shh.” the cave is dark and you can barely make out his face.
Voices from the fauti had gotten louder and the grip on your shoulder had seemed to tighten in the slightest when the flickering light of fire came in view. It’s only then, when the echoes of the fatui were a few feet away from you did the stranger decide to move his hand from your shoulder down to your wrist pulling you after him, his footsteps loud and clear on the flat gray flooring of the cave.
There are overlapping voices from behind and the man in front of you speeds his steps, the distance between you and the fatui had seemed to increase and the voices had become more hushed as you continue forward, it wasn’t until the stranger in front of you stopped moving did you notice the sound of footsteps behind you quiet down.
With heavy breaths and shaky knees the two of you stop at a dead end, the stranger lets your hand go and cocks his head your way, the cave is still dark yet you are still able to make out the white mask that is covering his eyes, then you see strands of crimson hair framing his face and familiar ruby eyes scanning you.
Then everything clicks for you, with creased brows and gazes fixed on one another you take a step closer to the man. “..Diluc?” The words are whispered on your tongue but he doesn’t say anything back. You open your mouth to speak again but the words are cut short on your lips as the sound of heavy footsteps are heard from behind.
It seemed as if time slowed down, Diluc’s eyes flicker to look at the fatui, his hand reaching out towards you and your head is rested in the crook of his neck as he pulls you close to his body. He swings your figure around and to your horror, you catch sight of a pyro infused bullet running past you, the smooth metal grazing against Diluc’s skin, a groan leaving his mouth at the stinging feeling and you’re suddenly pushed into a narrow, dark, empty area within the cave.
It’s quiet for what feels like hours but is probably only a few seconds, the weight of Diluc on top of you is oddly comforting in the moment. Both of his hands are placed near your head and his breathing is heavy, your eyes are looking everywhere except his and the familiar feeling of butterflies floating in the pit of your stomach makes you feel dizzy.
Diluc removes his body when he hears the footsteps outside get quieter and you watch as he walks away from your figure with a limp. There’s nothing in the area except a few loose pieces of wood and the man wastes no time in gathering them together sparking a fire using his claymore.
You’re settled on the cold stone floor eyes never meeting his, instead they’re placed on the burning sticks. Diluc is sitting across from you with one knee propped up and his head leaned on the flat stone surface behind him.
The fire brought a comforting warmth to your bodies, orange hues of the flames reflecting off your faces. For a while the only noise in the empty space is the fire cracking until Diluc breaks the silence.
“You should know that it isn’t safe to be roaming around abandoned caves, especially if it seems like it’s being used.” his voice is soft when he speaks but his tone is harsh.
The air is surrounded by silence before you finally reply back. “I was picking mist flowers for..” when your eyes meet his you can feel your words start faltering, his crimson eyes are addicting to look at but you flick you eyes somewhere else feeling as if you’re gonna melt under his gaze, “a commission.” You finish trying to calm your frantic beating heart.
The white mask slips off his porcelain skin and you can see his brows crease in pain. He shakes his jacket off and he groans when he stands up turning his body away from your eyes, the sudden reminder of the pyro infused bullet hitting his skin has your face scrunched up in panic.
“Diluc, you’re hurt.” you’re unsure of what to do and when he turns his head back you’re biting your bottom lip in concern. “Let me help you.” But he turns his head back ignoring your stare on him.
“You don’t need to worry about me, you should take care of yourself.” With the small amount of courage left in your body you walk closer to the man and the sight of blood staining his clothes makes you wince.
“It’s the least I can do, you didn’t need to risk yourself to save me.” He turns his body towards you and he narrows his eyes. “You’re very important to me y/n, I didn’t want you to get hurt because of my actions.”
Your lips curl up into a smile and you move your hands to his chest pushing him back. “Then let me help you Diluc.” He lets you push him to the rock and he sits on the cold stone a small, “if you insist,” leaving his mouth. Diluc is a stubborn man, he would’ve insisted that he was fine and was able to patch himself up in no time but the genuine worry in your eyes had made him feel weak in the knees.
You're settled between his legs and despite him sitting on a rock his frame is equal to yours. Diluc’s eyes are casted on the flames burning on the wood his cheeks flaring red when you inform him to take his shirt off.
“So.. are you the famous dark knight hero everyone has been talking about?” you lightly shake your head in disbelief, Diluc’s eyes were back on your figure when you spoke and you tried to ignore his stare on you. “That name is rather absurd, I do hope you refrain from calling me that.” He lets out a scoff and you let out a small laugh.
The whole time you had refused to look at his bare upper body, the thought of touching his pale skin had made your heart feel as if it would jump out of your chest, but you can’t help and move your eyes to look at his wound.
The gash below his rib is small but there’s a ring of red forming around it, with gentle fingers your touch is light on his skin, the red scar is hot and feels as if you’re touching an open flame, you remove your fingers when Diluc flinches from your touch. Ripping off a piece of fabric from your skirt you use the thin material and start wrapping it over the wound.
Your fingers still feel like ice despite touching Diluc’s warm body. He lets out a grunt as you tighten the cloth around his waist, when you finish and tie the knot together he clenches his jaw, his head tilted back. “I’m all done.” The words are whispered on your lips as you catch sight of his eyes. “You can put your shirt back on now.” And you move your body away from him, embarrassment flooding in your stomach.
“Here,” picking up the mist flower that fell out of your basket near the pile of burning wood you press the cold blue flower against his wound. “that should help.” He sucks in a breath and takes the flower in his warm hands.
“Thank you y/n.” His gentle words brings a smile to your face and you fail to notice how close you are to the man. You clear your throat and nod at him, “of course.”
When you look at Diluc his eyes are focused on the mist flower as he continues to hold it over his cut, and you can’t help but stare at him with a clear look of adoration in your eyes.
“Y/n?” He fixes his gaze on you and you hum back a response, “I’m having a bit of trouble keeping the flower in place, do you mind helping me?” You lightly laugh and walk in his direction.
“Not at all Diluc.” Taking the cold flower from his hold you press it over to where his injury would be. “You know, you have really clumsy..” your words start to falter as you notice his eyes starring into yours then it flickers down to your lips, “..hands.”
Diluc’s ruby eyes lure you closer to him, the flower drops from your grasp and it makes a small noise as it falls to the floor, but neither one of you pay any attention it.
Even though he was holding the freezing flower moment ago Diluc's light touch on your waist is hot and he pulls you in between his legs again, your face inches away from his. He murmurs something under his breath but you’re too dazed to pick up his words.
“Can I kiss you?” It’s clear that he’s nervous because he bites his lower lip and removes his gaze off of yours and you find it to be very adoring, leaning forward you press a soft tender kiss to his delicate lips.
When you pull back there’s a grin on his face followed by a blush, he’s a bit hesitant with his actions but your flustered state must’ve boosted his ego, his grip on your waist tightens as he tugs your body forward, pressing another greedy languid kiss to you lips.
You cup his burning cheeks and you feel yourself falling deeper into a state of bliss. The kiss is fiery yet overwhelming as if he was devouring you, the taste of sweet grape juice lingers on your tongue and you relish in the bitter aftertaste of the kiss. You pull away from his lips brushing the strands of vermillion hair away from his face, the aftermath of the events makes your chest explode with warmth.
Diluc’s breath is heavy as he wraps his arms around your waist and pulls you into a hug resting his head in the crook of your neck. “Should I warm your fingers up while we’re hanging out in here?” With a shy smile you’re suddenly reminded that you’re stuck in a small cave with the man you just kissed.
“Sure,” you wrap your arms around his neck and remove his hair tie letting his locks fall over his shoulders, running your fingers through his soft hair you lean towards him in a teasing manner. “If it means that the dark knight hero gets to do it.” Diluc rolls his eyes and he holds your fingers up to his lip placing feathery kisses on your cold fingers.
