James Potter and his gang were just another version of Tobias Snape. What Tobias Snape was in Severus's muggle life, Potter and his gang were in the wizarding counterpart. Only, the latter were more powerful than Tobias Snape and it needed Snape to dredge up every ounce of knowledge and expertise he had to defend himself against this gang of bullies. The proof lies in the creation of curses like Sectumsempra. Snape haters pull up this point to show that he had an evil streak in him but the fact is that he devised these methods for defence and, if need be, offence. If the Marauders could strip Snape half naked in broad daylight and in full view of other students, one can only imagine what they tried on him when they found him alone somewhere.
Snape had hoped to find refuge at Hogwarts, amongst people of his kind, when his letter arrived. Hogwarts promised him a life away from a tyrannical father and a toxic domestic environment. The Marauders destroyed that for Snape. In the process, Snape lost not only his best friend but also the person he had the potential to become.
