Little bit of a Finnish info post!
There have been 4 shootings in Finland's history, one in 1989, 2007, 2008, then in 2024.
Let's start with Raumanmeri, on the 25th of January, 1989, an unnamed, 14 year old student walked into the school carrying two pistols and got to class at around 7:55 in the morning. After he calmed his nerves down and finally began the attack, his firearm failed to fire at least 3 times, then finally unloading and taking the life of another student. After this, he made his way to the back of the classroom after seeing everyone go into a panic. He then shot another student fatally, and another student was hit but managed to flee. After he decided he was done with his attack he ran out of the school on a designated escape route he had made beforehand. The Finnish police put out a warning with the perpetrators description and told people to give any information if they saw anyone matching the description. At around 9:30 a woman heard a knock on her door, it was a boy matching the description and he asked for water, the woman later told police since she had yet heard the broadcast. The perpetrator walked along a nearby river to hide his scent but was still found at around 17:00 (5:00pm).
And then we have Jokela, on the 7th of November, 2007, Pekka-Eric Auvinen would walk into his school at around 11:40. At 11:42 he would take his first victim, then went to hide in a nearby restroom. Some people rushed over to the victim and thought the situation wasn't as serious as it was, they thought he had just bumped his head. Auvinen would then take the lives of two more victims outside of the restroom then another one as he was leaving. At 11:46 he then would catch up to the nurse and another pupil, they both would turn into victims. Most of the deaths happened in the first 4 minutes. At 11:47, head teacher Helena Kalmi would be alerted of the shooting, but would make the mistake of not being completely truthful in her PA announcement. Auvinen took this time to discharge his firearm 53 times and even spared the life of an unsuspecting mother he made eye contact with. After this he would make his way to the second floor where he found two students sitting, seemingly oblivious to the situation. He fired, one escaped and the other unfortunately became a victim. Auvinen would begin to pour lighter fluid on walls of the corridor where the previous victim was shot, he was unable to light the fire. He would make his way to the canteen but couldn't get in due to the doors being locked. At 11:54 Kalmi would leave the school with the education welfare officer and stopped near the pond to take a phone call. Auvinen would emerge from the school and meet with Kalmi face to face, which she would try and convince him to surrender. At 11:57 he then shot her seven times. After this he went back into the school and found a class with some students, he told them to start destroying things and when they didn't, he got angry and began to shoot at windows and a tv in the classroom, that's when a student decided to play along and kick a desk over. Pekka being content, moved along. Auvinen would spot first responders and began to fire at them, but the bullet did not penetrate the glass. And at 12:03 he would take his last shots targeting anyone but himself. Then at 12:04, Auvinen made his way to the cafeteria bathrooms where he would throw his jacket and briefcase on the ground, put the gun to his head, then shot himself. The attack was over. He was pronounced dead at 10:15PM.
Then there was Kauhajoki. On the 23rd of September, 2008, Matti Juhani Saari would walk into his school using the basement doors, the first shot rang at around 10:40 and the first call to responders was made at 10:43. Saari was armed with a pistol and several soda bottles containing gasoline. He wore an outfit scarily similar to Pekkas since he was a huge fan of the perpetrator, even claiming he had connections to him through video games. Saari had initially shot at a group of students in the hall but made his way to a classroom, the very one he was supposed to be in the day. Saari would walk into his classroom which had 12 people inside and 1 teacher, survivors say he went to everyone individually and was acting quite aggressive during it all. He did leave this room at least once to reload, where the teacher in the room saw an oppurtunity to block the door, but ended up being a fatal mistake after Saari got back into the room. 9 victims were in the classroom and one was in the hallway, after he deemed the attack done there, he began to pour a flammable liquid all over the class and lit it, this would be successful. All victims were female besides the teacher, and one of Saaris friends in the class, Marko Koskinen, who was the believed person to record most of Saaris personal shooting videos. At 11:05 Saari would fire at first responders causing them to retreat. Saari would have an hour of waiting and nothing happening, he would take this time to call an old friend of his at 11:53 where he confessed to everything, even seeming calm about it on the phone, but mainly wanted to say goodbye. He would then put the gun to his head and pull the trigger, he was found still alive at 12:13 where he would succumb to his injuries at 16:46. (4:46PM) The attack was over.
Finally we have one I am not very familiar with at all, this being the first time I've even heard about it. On the 2nd of April, 2024, an unnamed student, aged 12, entered the school. (Viertola School) He would then shoot 3 fellow pupils, whilst only one was fatal, the other two were pretty serious. Police arrived at 9:17 and the school was put under lockdown. A teacher managed to convince the student to end his attack there, he would flee the scene shooting in the air a few more times and at a car once. They found the perpetrator at 9:58. Not much was released about this case given the age of the perpetrator and the country where it took place.
