We Are Men: Masculinity in America
You’ve become well acquainted with us. You aren’t sure who we are inside, at the root. We give off mixed signals which stir your doubt and curiosity. We make some wonder, and others uncomfortable. Our makeup doesn’t fit the ideal mold. We’re self-aware while navigating amidst public uncertainty. We’re men. However men with distinction – men with taste. Men with strong interests in the aesthetics of life. Men with appreciation for creation and design. Men with feminine and masculine attributes that intertwine. Men with passion for athletic contest and zeal for film and fashion. We are men.
“ In America to have taste, you know, the way we bash people, the way we call people gay if they like uh, you know look at the mirror too long.”
Anatomy of a Scene: 'A Streetcar Named Desire'
A Streetcar Named Desire is a climatic family tale that channels crisis into greater meaning. Released in 1951 A Streetcar Named Desire is “a play that embodies the social events and changes that occurred at the time” (Group 3: A Streetcar Named Desire Par.1). This play involves three main characters Stella, Stanley, and Blanche. Throughout the play, couple Stanley and Stella Kowalski battle with Stella’s sister Blanche and her incessant deceitfulness. Blanche arrives at the Kowalski residence with claims that the recent loss of her and Stella’s family-home prompted her leave of absence from her role as a school teacher and member of the Laurel, Mississippi community. Skeptical at first sight, Stanley inquires about these claims and reveals Blanche’s past corruption and current lies. It is found that Blanche departed from her hometown to stay with the Kowalski’s due to her public exile. Blanche’s previous activities with prostitution and pedophilia are shown to be the true precursors that led to her denunciation and exile from her life as she knew it. This brutal reality is revealed through a series of neglect and violence during A Streetcar Named Desire. Upon realization, the Kowalski’s make the reluctant decision to dismiss Blanche from their home and register her into a psychiatric hospital. The rollercoaster of emotions and conflict throughout this play provides for an entertaining and classic piece of work. However, what makes A Streetcar Named Desire a cornerstone in American literature is not simply its sensationalism but its implications about society and the different roles people occupy within it.
The film adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire provides an unrivaled landscape for the viewer’s interpretation of character and plot dynamics. In the text the reader is vaguely introduced to concepts such as sexuality, gender roles, and feminism. The film provides a unique approach by highlighting these untouched subjects in a subtle way. Rather than explicitly identifying to the viewer scenes of gender inequality and abuse, Tennessee Williams uses an array of film techniques to convey these themes. A Streetcar Named Desire is a remarkable piece of work in that its film adaptation remains true to the content of the text but rather emphasizes certain key elements to enhance the audience’s experience.
'Acting White' - Race on Race Discrimination
As you speed down the hall, books weighing you down, you hear chuckles. Stumbling into class you beat the late bell which triggers a sense of relief. Remembering the night before, you hear a similar sound come from your mother’s phone. As the rings echo from down the hall you reach a place of tranquility. Leaving your room you hear her murmur, “Tryna’ be white, do somethin’ else than study”. Opening your bookbag you snap out of the daydream, rather nightmare, and begin your notes.
Imagine being castigated for being successful, this is the sad narrative told by many high achieving minorities in America. The rollercoaster of exclusion this student faces travels from the home to school and back, each and every day. In the home environment this student is misunderstood and sometimes chastised for placing academic success as their paramount interest. Within the school setting a student is excluded and ridiculed for engaging in their educational experience by either joining clubs, showing interest in certain types of music, or simply arriving to class on time (Fryer 2006). Students who exhibit this behavior of intellectual pursuit are often labeled as ‘acting white’.
Being picked on and socially isolated because of intellectual acuity has been a known ongoing tradition in our American society. Deemed “nerds” or “geeks” this classification of students has been fixated in the U.S. school system. This segment of our culture has been closely researched due to it causing school shootings, suicides, and depression among adolescents. What hasn’t been as closely evaluated is the culture of anti-intellectualism in minority communities. Professors Roland Fryer and Paul Torelli take on this task head-first daring to answer the questions unanswered. But first, what exactly does it mean to ‘act white’?

I posted these shoes a little bit ago and I was finally able to get them. These Nikes are a collaboration done with J. Crew that I had to take advantage of. I'm really into form fitting shoes that are light and confined to the shape of my foot. They're extremely functional and appealing at the same time. I wish I could stock up on a dozen of these for the future. My only strife with this shoe is that only three colorways were offered. A black colorway would be awesome but I guess I'll have to settle for the Montreals for that look. J.Crew is the only place you'll find these in the whole country... so did I luck up? I don't know, they've been selling these for a long time so maybe the demand isn't that high. Well, anyways, til' next time.
Kanye West Announces "Yeezus" Tour
anye West took to Twitter yesterday, September 6th, to announce the dates for his much anticipated "Yeezus" tour. With many listeners holding differing opinions about Kanye's unorthodox approach to Yeezus, this project remains as the most discussed and debated album of 2013.
The tour will hit twenty-three different venues and cities kicking off October 19th! The "Yeezus" tour has been announced as "KANYE WEST'S 1ST SOLO TOUR IN 5 YEARS WITH KENDRICK LAMAR". This duo of the rising star, Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West will be an interesting sight to see. There isn't any evidence of West and Lamar having any affiliation other than Kendrick's ties with Jay-Z. So, will the two be debuting new collaborations with each other?

Me: Remember when we went to the movies and saw that homeless man?
Me: Like I hate seeing that...
Me: And last night after work at 12 there was a guy in the parking lot..
Me: And my mom says "look".
Me: Like the guy isn't a zoo animal.. I'm not going to observe or look him in the eye If i'm not going to help him..
Me: She's like 'pray for him' .. well of course, but what immediate or practical result does that have?
Me: Think about all the homeless people that need real, tangible help that get passed up on by people who just 'pray' for them.
Me: And people use the cover-up that 'all we can do is pray for them' to avoid actually helping people.
Me: And just because they're homeless they 'must suffer a condition', which at times is true, but just another cover-up or stereotype for people to put up a wall and not help.
Friend: True I understand man.

Justin Bieber's "Believe" the acoustic version is still awesome. My µTorrent files are still "seeding", whatever that means. I saw Kevin Hart's "Let Me Explain" today. Surprisingly the theatre wasn't crowded. The stand-up was okay, not hilarious in my opinion. Maybe I would've found it funnier if I watched it in a different environment? I don't know.. I can't wait for the Charlotte Hornets to come back.. that'll be good for the city. Pusha T's "My Name is My Name" comes out in a few weeks, can't wait for that. There's an early access window for my AP scores starting at 5 a.m. lasting until Saturday, July 6 at 4:59 a.m. I think I may be using quotations the wrong way, most likely.. oh well. I still listen to Beyoncé's "4" album, classic. Andy Allo is dope, I need to catch up on her. People are so stupid. Maybe not stupid, more-so ignorant. Ignorant in the sense of it's true meaning, lacking knowledge. I had the opportunity to see Dave Chappelle live and missed out. I've missed out on a lot of shows; Kendrick Lamar, A$AP, Schoolboy Q.. the list goes on. I'm definitely anticipating Q's #OXYMORON.. it'll be the best album of the year, yeah. I haven't listened to Yeezus in a while or Born Sinner.. eh. Jay Z's album came out yesterday.. eh. I haven't heard it yet.. not in a rush, maybe I should be? Eh. Til next time.

A$AP Ferg - Hood Pope [Trap Lord the Mixtape]
Earlier in March A$AP Ferg sat down with Q Deezy while in Philly for an exclusive interview. Accompanied with mob member A$AP Nast, Ferg discussed the first verse he ever wrote along with artists he's worked with for his upcoming mix-tape. I can't help but to still be infatuated with Ferg's freestyles during this interview. Ferg spits a verse from a track on Trap Lord entitled Hood Pope. Amazingly three months later the anticipation for Trap Lord still lingers. Check out A$AP Ferg on The Q Deezy Show now!
Trap Lord is scheduled to release August 20th, 2013.
