lapis and pearl are both alike in ways too close and unalike in what matters most, and that’s why they’d hate each other.
every other crystal gem defected homeworld with pride, meanwhile lapis and pearl didn’t get to have a true choice in the matter—pearl would always follow pink and lapis was treated as a traitor the moment she tried to return. a point is made in their narratives of how their diamonds “abandoned” them, with blue diamond failing to account for the gem she created and rose turning into steven. they yearn for a past that will never return and live in a present they feel unfit in.
they’re likely some of the strongest of their gem type due to what they’ve gone through, though such adversity means they both deal with their trauma horribly: by lashing out. they’re selfish in this way, inadvertently continuing to hurt everyone around them. they’re also both fiercely protective over steven to the point of martyrdom. a big part of their arcs is both growing past this but also learning that steven—and the earth—are worth staying for.
yet their backstories are almost in reverse. lapis started out a (presumably) high ranking gem, with the freedom to visit earth with no assigned task, who was reduced to an object. pearl started at the lowest caste of her society, where she was practically treated as nothing more than a tool, who then broke free from her caste and became one of the main figures of her own rebellion. in one of her lowest moments, pearl so deeply wished she could leave earth and see homeworld once again. lapis has the freedom to physically do so; she eventually regains her wings and can leave the planet she is trapped on. pearl's ship broke down—she failed.
it was pearl who kept lapis trapped on earth in a mirror. lapis is not a forgiving gem.

on tiktok people will quit their jobs after going viral once but on here not only can any post get 50k notes, but if it does theres nothing you can do with it. theres no monetization or any transferable skills at all. you just made a funny post and people liked it and thats the start and end of your career

as an adult, some adults really aren’t mature enough to separate fiction from reality or understand the basic concepts of fiction not necessarily reflecting someone’s real life moral compass and it’s embarrassing. how are you a grown adult and still acting like a mean girl who bullies real people for the sake of fictional characters and feelings morally superior

If youre a closeted person somewhere out there thinking "I want to transition but it would be less progressive/unique/countercultural for me to be that gender instead of this one" please know that you are a real person not a character in a narrative and cant live your life based on what is good media representation. You are real you can only be yourself and theres no moral weight to any identity over another
Liberal transphobes enjoy positioning trans identities as regressive compared to cis queerness or like non-transitioning transness or anything else they can leverage to make transphobia look progressive and I think its easy to absorb that message subconciously. But in real life we just are what we are and no ranking of validity can change the fact that you have an identity that is NOT chosen and is just your unchangeable truth. Not only should you not have to live a life dictated by what is most countercultural to identify as or whatever but also: being trans is extremely countercultural and feminist and leftist to begin with and theyre only trying to convince you otherwise bc theyre bigots
