that Brian Eno quote about how whatever you find most repulsive about a medium (film grain, record scratches/fuzz, CDs skipping) will be the first thing you try and emulate once that medium is obsolete because it's "the sign of a moment too powerful for the medium assigned to contain it".... man.......
“Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.” -Brian Eno
Dogs serve as a kind of virtue eater for Americans to pour all of their kindness into without the risk of improving society or being nice to someone with any agency

Also another thing that's been on my mind is how the older I get (not that im not still very young) the more I get in touch with the very real physical experience of having a body that is an animal. For all the pretentious heady things that I tend to engage with all day it's literally so important to know feel and accept that you're an animal still. Your body is still that of an animal. There is no escaping this and that's good. For many years I wished to purely exist as a mind disconnected from the physical realm but now that I take good care of my body wrt regular food intake exercise and rest it's like yessss im a beast my body is that of a large animal. This is no furry shit (which I will never understand tbh. I know it's like 99% an autism thing and very related to alienation from your body and the like and I experience all that but still I don't get it at all) but rather an actual integration of my mind into my body or vice versa. It's a crazy feeling when the connection between the way you treat your body and the way your mind works shows itself so directly lol
It's rly crazy that there is no good online space for lit discussion. Reddit is full of either 16 year old dostoyevsky chuds or middle aged stephen king fans (spineless liberal flavor), messageboards are either dead or fascist, Twitter is not for serious people, neither is Instagram, booktok is absolutely brain melting levels of consumerism, etc. I guess that leaves substack but you know. Do I even have to say it. Anyway this post was inspired by encountering a painfully inane take re tess of the d'urbervilles

“Modernity was built upon “technologies that made us all ghosts”, and postmodernity could be defined as the succumbing of historical time to the spectral time of recording devices.”
— Mark Fisher, The Metaphysics of Crackle: Afrofuturism & Hauntology
Lebanon is currently being bombed with thousands displaced and hundreds martyred. The Israeli strikes are intensifying and nearly one million people are displaced as of 3/12/2026.
Below are a few sources accepting donations to provide food, aide, and more to those affected. If you have any means to donate please do so. The Lebanese Red Cross - provides life saving medical services across the country
Lebanese Food Bank - distributing food and essential supplies to those who are directly affected and displaced
Egna Legna Besidet - a women migrant domestic worker run humanitarian and advocacy organization providing humanitarian assistance and emergency aide for migrant domestic workers
If anyone has any other places to donate, please share.
