So it looks like it’s a case of pronunciation changing and then spelling not keeping up (or the older spelling being restored by prescriptivists), which is a common reason for illogical English spellings (see also all the kn- words). As to why the pronunciation changed, goodness knows but that’s just a thing that happens. I bet some 18th century parents were pretty annoyed at their 18th century kids for it though.
