Itās so structurally important and thematically loaded that chronologically we have the scene where Armand describes and reveals his past as a child sex slave to Louis, in which he praises his maker for being āmercifulā in the same breath tht he describes that sometimes his maker forced him to have sex with his adult friends when he was a child which Armand considered warranted since he was purchased to provide those skills after all (!?) and this was the price he had to pay for the mercy he was given āimmediately proceeding and directly leading into the scene where Armand berates and threatens Claudia because she refuses to endure āfifteen minutes of degradationā a day and should be more grateful and recognize the mercy she is being afforded
And then people take this scene and go āyeah Armand is the perpetrator of racial violence and he upholds those systems because heās like a horrible racistā like even when the show is saying look at how Armand is a victim of racial violence and genuinely believes that the only way to survive within these systems of oppression is to endure them and not fight the injustice because it will only make it worse and heās trying to teach this lesson to Claudia because he genuinely believes that by thinking she deserves any better then the minimal amount of abuse she has to take for a guaranteed life of safety that she is being insane and looking a gift horse in the mouth for no reason. Like the point is that Armand is so horrifically traumatized that he canāt even begin to conceptualize the reality that abuse is never warranted and itās actually incredibly reasonable for someone to decide that they deserve better then to be put through degrading acts and humiliation no matter how āgoodā they have it.
Heās not the oppressor in this situation š pinning the blame of racism onto the literal former slave who has been victimized for so long and so brutally that he canāt even envision the possibility of a better life is missing the point I feel. Like Armand is definitely not a good guy but he is not meant to represent āthe oppressorā. What would the show even be trying to say if he was. Heās not Lestat heās not a white abuser š can we use our brains
All of this tbh
Also the heartbreaking fact that at no point Armand thought Claudia would be able to make it. And not in an arrogant way, but calling it a shame, because he sees her as what she is, maybe the only who does, l but knows in this world there is no place for people like her.
And in spite of this, he still tries to teach her, shows her the only chance he thinks she has: to succumb to the role everyone wants her to play, at least enough to satiate them.
I mean Armand only survived as long as he has because at some point, he bowed his head to his would-be killers, shifted himself to their liking to be kept alive. Eventually he even finds himself in power. But he's still in the coven, still has not dared to rebel. And Claudia is so much weaker than him, she would never be able to best them by strength, so submission is the only way he can imagine for her. And even worse, if it pains her so much to conform, then ending this existence wouldn't be the worst outcome for her.
So really it's some fucked up self fulfilling prophecy.
Ao yeah, while he does absolute abominable shit, especially towards Claudia, that is no way justified by the means - I don't think it's fair to say the means were malicious. In fact I'd say Armand related more to Claudia than Louis ever did or could
Are you guys ready for this to become a hunger games account because I am ready to dig into this
Everything I learn about the 1994 Interview with the Vampire movie is insane. They hung their actors upside down every day for make up. Brad Pitt figured "a life like this isn't worth living after weeks of shooting. Antonio Banderaz learned English for this movie, meaning that we might not have Puss in Boots without it. Anne Rice wanted it to be Gay so bad but they were like no it's the 1970s and Aids is a thing we cannot make a movie about men exchanging bodily fluids sexually. No not if it's blood either. Her solution was ok if we have to we can make it heterosexual by gender bending Louis but female Louis should be played by cher. Cher wrote a song for it. There was a discussion about making it a musical. This list goes on.
and leonard nimoy lobbied to play lestat just to add to the backstory lore
I didn't even know this, but what a perfect timing to unbury this post cause a couple days ago I heard about rumoured AL PACINO LESTAT
AL
PACINO
LESTAT
Might need to go back to my roots aka being insane about Eliot Waugh and Margo Hanson

It seems that many people in iwtv fandom don't realize that heterosexuality and heteronormativity are different things. Lgbt relationships are not automatically free of gendered, heteronormative dynamics and the influence of patriarchal society. We've been very clearly shown over and over again that Louis and Lestat's relationship exists in the context of gendered, patriarchal abuse and power. That has been the case ever since Anne Rice in the 70s started writing a story based on her troubled marriage and the death of her daughter, where the characters of Louis and Lestat are explicitly based on her and her husband, and Louis was called a woman and represented Rice's ideas of feminity, and Lestat became the ideal of masculinity Rice wished she could be. The themes of gender and patriarchy are in the very core of the series, and the show has chosen to tackle them head-on. To ignore it and act like it's something that fans are trying to insert into the story is just willful blindness
It's very much an important part of the story but with the frame of non heterosexual heteronormativity it's fluid - which to me personally makes it all the more interesting. Rice was angry at her husband more often than not, he had privileges she didn't and his behavior didn't exactly help that dynamic. She put a lot of that into Lestat. On the other hand she switches between these PoVs, and we have Lestat as a less privileged person (grew up in poverty vs Louis who's always been rich) being looked down on and often unfairly judged by their more normative partner.
Heteronormativity is very present in this story but it's not "one is the male and patriarch and the other is the female coded victim" it's "They're both male but were raised in heteronormative society and it leaves them with an inability to have a relationship on equal footing
crazy that no one in iwtv is doing insane unhinged shit to keep armand in their lives forever. i personally would wage wars for him. i would keep him encased in glass forever like a butterfly but he would be fed and receive plenty of enrichment in there. this post is getting away from me.

I find it so funny when people get.mad at Armand for his involvement in Claudia and Madeleine's deaths when it was literally in the book? Tell me you haven't read the book without saying you havent read the book, lol
itās especially funny cuz Armand didnāt even do anything wrong and he literally said he couldnāt prevent it and he has trauma and he literally has huge eye and fat tits and heās 10 inches like how can u be mad at him??? (But in all seriousness i never cared about Claudia and Madeline in a way that surpassed their compelling narrative function and I was just looking forward to their death cuz itās a great climax š I have trouble with empathy pertaining to fiction cuz of autism but I rlly donāt get being mad at a character for doing smth that is essential to the story, contextually understandable from his perspective, and super compelling and fascinating. Likeee I physically canāt be upset by a story being good and tragic. Not that I donāt like Claudia and Madeline just that I like their deaths more and what it does for iwtv š I hope that makes sense lmao)
No cause even taking the Armand defender goggles of and being realistic (these guys are all the fucking worst rip claudia) Armand was hilariously open about this. Complete straight faced shrugging "Oh yeah no Claudia is gonna die like they'll kill her like you heard the laws like she's practical dead" from day one
I know I said this before it's just... Louis listen to your child when she tells you something is up goddammit "love makes you stupid"
Addressing a large trend and no particular person or opinion but the overwhelming framing of Armand as the uber bad guy and Louis as the innocent little damsel feels part of the weird overcorrection some of yall do with Louis when you try to proof you're not racist.
Avoiding falling into racist stereotypes like the angry black man trope is a good thing but completely "feminizing" and taking away all consequence of a characters actions is maybe not the solution here. Louis is a complex layered character, we don't need to reduce him to such a flat one instead. Jacob Anderson himself said he loves being able to portray this kind of problematic complex monster, finally.
Also kinda wild to see how lost the degrassi school of social justice crowd is with this. Yall consume so much ya/childresn content (which im not judging for theres some great stuff out there, but it's just a lot simpler, less nuanced, good or bad type stuff) so now you'reunable to judge a toxic relationship between two dark skinned man cause damn have we ever seen that before? We don't have a template for that.
Anyway Louis was fucking vile to Armand and had that coming, RIP Claudia though you didn't deserve that shit from any of these fuckers
Oh my god I forgot completely about this š
I think it's a good show of how desperate for companionship Armand has to be, to overlook this and be fine with a partner using a childhood name (one of the last crumbs of his past) & Maitre (Master) to dom him in and out of bed.
not to mention at one point armand says he knew lestat was bouncing around louis' mind when they were together so my guy knew he was playing a second fiddle
No cause the way Louis treats Armand was so vile and it's crazy to me how many people don't pick up on it. Saying it upfront I love these characters, I love how fucked up they are, I love being challenged with the media I consume - especially in our current extremely polished mass production media hellscape - but Louis is capital A Awful.
I ship Loumand! Less like a Tumblr shipper and more like they're two stars crashing into each other and I'm a little guy stargazing going "woah" but I do. Cause the dynamic is fascinating! Absolutely toxic, but great!
It's easy to not notice why Armand fell for Louis in the first place. It's easy to say Armand is evil and weird because Armand is prone to remorseless killing of other vampires and this is the vampire show.
But.
But! Every vampire kills, most of them nightly. When Armand says they're monsters and shouldn't exist, that's not a weird religious take, it's him watching other vampires brutally kill an innocent person every night onstage and noting it as fucked up. Armand hasn't been on that stage once, himself.
He falls for Louis cause Louis is similarly disgusted by the theatric murder. He likes how Louis "withholds." He thinks hell yeah someone else actually putting a value on human life! Someone good to follow cause Armand cannot exist without following someone. So that's nice! Louis is a good guy. He can open up. Tell him his trauma and worries.
Except; sike! Louis doesn't have good morals he's just prideful and self righteous.
Louis judges the theatre but bashes in a random guy's head. He ran brothels for years, long after he had to, long after he openly said he was aware how he was harming these women who have no other choice.
And let's not forget it's like a 1920s American brothel of mostly woc with white patrons. You know the shit happening there was awful. Not that Louis cares. He cares about having power.
And knowing Armands trauma gives him power. And Armand plays along, even when he sees the victim Louis brutally murdered, even when Louis starts treating him like a slave, almost giddy about his trauma.
And then Madeleine happens. And Armand says no. Cause that's his biggest moral imperative, more vampires means one more murder a night for potential eternity. He says a very loud and clear no! And Louis tries to make him do it anyway. Uses the name Armand was called when the csa happened. That's the final nail in the coffin, when Armand said he decided to betray him after the turning of Madeleine I instantly got why.
And God the way Louis punches him through a wall, threatening to hit him again, calling him Rashid so naturally. Making him a servant. Np wonder Jacob Anderson was worried we'd hate Louis after this. And Armand could defend himself, but he doesn't, he leaves his home and goes God knows where.
Idk man justice for armand
itās so wild to me when people talk about Armand and Louisās dynamic as if since Armand is a lot older then Louis he always has the upper hand and Louis canāt āreallyā hurt him, like šitās not like Armand was severely tortured his entire childhood and treated like a slave who was incapable of being anything other then an object his entire adulthood until he was eventually kidnapped and indoctrinated into a cult where he was beaten and starved and tortured into compliance, all of this forcing him to believe that there is no existence for him that doesnāt include submission to the greater power. wow itās not like Armand isnāt capable of understanding or fully comprehending any of the things heās experienced throughout his long life because he has been so severely traumatized that he canāt remember 80% of his existence and has regressed to a point bcus of his upbringing where he starts to panic and loose his shit if he doesnāt have a daddy/master to take care of him and to submit to bcus if he doesnāt have someone there telling him what to do heās nothing. Its not like this means that Armand will do anything to not be abandoned bcus he literally can not live independently. Itās not like Armandās age only says anything about his physical strength bcus hes the most lost, learned helpless, confused and fumbling character in the series and he has learned nothing from anything he has been through. But yeah for sure, Armand is older so he always has the upper hand and Louis hurting him doesnāt mean nothing cuz Armand canāt be hurt haha. Seems legit. Armand is old so he isnāt capable of being extremely emotional vulnerable and Louis is young (over 100 hrs old) so heās not capable of recognizing a vulnerable person and taking advantage of that vulnerability for his own gain (itās totally not like his job as a mortal was doing exactly that). Ten out of ten nuance and complex analysis guys the old one is powerful and the young one is weak thanks for that stunning show of media literacy šš
Thissssssss

One thing I feel like people don't take into account enough about the finale is how much Armands actions parallel Louis in 01x07.
Saying Armand is toxic and Loumand is over when Louis did pretty much the same thing to Lestat last season, aiding and abetting in his murder but being unable to go properly through with it. And all of us agreed it was fair cause of the dv - which Louis also did!
Throwing Armand down, threatening him with that rolled up paper like an angry father threatens a dog. Gaslighting? We all remember those fuck me eyes with the little eyeliner, going uwu Lestat ily forever we don't plan to kill you noš„ŗ
Just cause Louis wasn't as girl boss at it as Armand doesn't mean he didn't do it.
This is still Louis PoV, of course Armand being part of his attempted murder looks bad, but from Armand PoV it's your 200 year long besties making you drop your toxic ass boyfriend.
It's not like it was Armands idea to do it, but choosing the coven over Louis made sense. Y'all saw how that man acted when Armand told him his trauma. We all remember "face down in the coffin." and "I used to be really good at running things"
The only real tragedy here is Claudia and Madeleine. And Armand at every point made clear that he didn't believe in a happy ending for them. Madeleine lived for Claudia and he was convinced Claudia couldn't live. She was just too young, and as someone who has experienced immense trauma at a young age he deemed her better off dead.
He had no right to do that, and it's incredibly fucked, but it was never malicious. Never sneaky. He told Louis to get out of Paris.

Canāt get angry at Marius because he loves him. Canāt get angry at the Children of Darkness because heās still a part of it. Canāt get angry at the slavers who hunted him down because theyāre gone. Canāt get angry at the shipās captain because heās gone. Canāt get angry at any of the countless people who hurt and abused him because theyāre all gone. Canāt get angry at any of it because it was a lifetime ago. Itās too little, too late. Guess thereās no one left to be angry at besides people who remind him of his own victimhood.
