this pride month remember to love and appreciate aromanticism, aromantic people, aromantic love, aromantic relationships. this pride month get more aromantic
(As this project now encompasses twenty stories, I thought I'd celebrate with a master post.)
Is it "aay-romantic" or "arrow-mantic"? What if she hears "Iâm a romantic" instead of "Iâm aromantic"? What if she says "isnât that just friendship" or "that canât be real" or, worst of all, "Iâm looking for something more"?
Hallo, Aro is a series of flash fiction stories about allosexual aromantic characters navigating friendship, sexual attraction, aromanticism and the weight of amatonormative expectation.
Contains: Dragons, a duchess's daughter, an autistic who collects pride merch, odd voyages into creative non-fiction, werewolves and gods, hunters of witches and the fae, the power in aromantic discovery, and lots of allo-aro feels and experiences.
Plus many trans, multisexual and sapphic aros!
Unspoken
How do you tell the person you like about the relationship you want when it requires a language nobody speaks?
Leaving
You leave a trail of people behind you, the cruel and curious and stubborn, until you find someone who understands the word aromantic.
Friendship
All Eliza wants is to partner a dragonâs handmaiden without risking romantic complicationsâbut her dragon has something just as valuable to offer.
Lucky
The only way Piper can survive his workplace's fumbling attempts at aro acceptance is to make a game of it.
Attraction
Eliza canât help fearing that her interest in another girl is best explained by a word she doesnât wish applied to her: romance.
Existence
How do you come to terms with your path through life when nobody said the word that describes you?
Neuronormative
What does aromanticism mean to an autistic who cannot distinguish it from alloromanticism?
Loveless
When Paide ein Iteme says the words âI donât loveâ, he doesnât just refer to romantic relationships.
Monstrous
You submit, obediently, to their chains and collars ⌠until you start to wonder what it is about your beastâs nature that requires the loving to demand such restrictions.
Pressure, Side One
When aromantics speak of the social pressures that weight our existence, sex negativity seldom comes first to mind.
Pressure, Side Two
Even in a city wrought to display our proud green, many things are shaded purple.
Abrasive
Spending Midsummer night with a pretty man shouldnât be a problem for Suki ⌠except for everybody elseâs romantic expectations.
Question
When people ask about your love life, it demonstrates their acceptance of your queerness. What does it mean, as an aromantic, when they show no interest at all?
Antagonist
Cai likes women, casual sex and an absence of long-term relationships. None which would be a problem if said women didnât see this as proof of his becoming the enemy...
Witch
The forest road promises you the chance of a world beyond marriageâs expectation ⌠but the witch waiting by the roadside offers up queerer, stranger proofs of validity.
Hunter
The Citadel assumes that Prudence obediently searches for the sorcerer potentateâs missing twin ⌠but she has her own reasons to hunt the Ringâs witches.
Pillar
When fog creeps and moon fades, the desperate seek out gods few dare name ⌠but even gods struggle to witness the cruel consequences of their peopleâs amatonormativity.
Tomorrow
Stories speak of heroesâ sexual escapades on the night before they risk their lives, but Darius doesnât dread death as much as he does the complications of surviving to see the day after tomorrow.
Steel
When a needlewoman agrees to run away with her fae lover, their fairy-tale ending has little to do with happily-ever-after.
Future
Helping Sala choose an outfit to attract men's attention seems an exercise in absurdity. Yet when Sala asks Daisy about her romantic dreams, the answer just might change her future.

Helping Sala choose an outfit to attract men's attention seems an exercise in absurdity. Yet when Sala asks Daisy about her romantic dreams, the answer just might change her future.
Hallo, Aro is a series of flash fiction stories about allosexual aromantic characters navigating friendship, sexual attraction, aromanticism and the weight of amatonormative expectation.
Contains: A woman who dreams of her romantic happily-ever-after; a woman who dreams of other women but not a lifetime; and the ache of growing into an allosexual aromantic adulthood.
Length: 1, 039 words.
Content advisory: This story contains sexual touch, physical intimacy, sexual attraction and romantic attraction mentions or references. Please expect a focus on the intersection of heteronormativity, amatonormativity and misogyny, particularly in relation to the expected roles women play in sexual relationships, marriage, family, childbearing and childraising.
âNo, not this one.â Sala scowls, turns from the mirror and tosses another blouse atop the growing pile. Skirts, kirtles, shawls and stockings form colourful mounds across her attic roomâs slanted floorâpiles enough, Daisy thinks, that Sala must have pillaged her motherâs wardrobe. âNothing works! If only I could afford something newâŚâ
âWeâll be waving at the queen-to-beâs cortege as it passes.â Daisy, tired witness to Salaâs experiments, lounges across the bed. Given that Daisyâs interest in attire starts with ânot nakedâ and ends with âwonât trip over itâ, Salaâs courting her opinion seems as foolish an undertaking as this quest through fashionâs discarded mountains. âWhy must you look so perfect?â
âWhy must you look perfect?â Sala, sighing, slumps to the floor in a froth of petticoats. âDaise, youâve no imagination.â
People level such accusations at Daisy more often than she appreciates, but she works to keep her voice level. Sala, at least, never intends unkindness. âHow so? Are her courtiers likely to notice anyone in the street?â
âIt isnât about the seeingâalthough if a handsome townie spots me, Iâll take him.â Sala snatches up the closest blouse and lobs the offending garment at Daisyâs chest. âItâs about the possibility that his eyes land upon mine, like in a story. Donât you dream that way? About ladies for you, of course, but the dreamingâs the sameâa rich, gorgeous noblewoman picking you out from the crowd?â
Daisy takes no issue with the blouse, for Sala owns a deft hand and the patience to spend her evenings embroidering pink roses upon cream linen. She takes issue with the statement, howeverâsomething said in tones of terrible casualness given the implication.
âWomen? I ⌠I like men.â
Somewhat.
Sala snorts. âThen why have I never seen you stare at a manâs arse? Iâve certainly seen you trying not to stare at womenâs arses.â
âI like men,â Daisy protests, looking up at the cracked ceiling. How does Sala know? Daisy makes a point of talking about men with the appropriate enthusiasm for a woman desirous of a husband. She bemoans her uncourted state lest anyone realise that she contentedly remains soâall while wishing to bed the befreckled butcherâs girl. âSome men. If theyâre shorter than me and sensible about it. And IâŚâ Daisy draws a delaying breath. âWell, I donât like all womenâŚâ
Just quite a few of them.
In ways she isnât supposed to entertain.
âWhy should you? I donât want every man.â Sala, sagely nodding, drags something yellow out from beneath a teetering pile. âAnyway, you want a beautiful woman to sweep you off your feetâor perhaps you sweep her off her feet? You get married, throw flowers, imagine your life togetherâit doesnât matter that you canât properly wed. You still dream.â
âNo,â Daisy says softly.
âIt isnât about whether a priest will actually marry youââ
âI meanâI donât dream about it.â
Sala turns her head, her hands upon her hips. With her brown braids pinned and her brows arched high, she looks akin to her motherâeven down to the stern, condemning stare they both mocked in their childhood. When did that gaze turn real? How did relationships with boys cease being a bewildered joke, becoming instead a driving desire? Why has Sala, now fluent in the expected trappings of adult life, embraced these changes?
âYou never think about being a womanâs wife?â Sala, frowning, holds the yellow skirt up against her waist. âOr leaving for a far-away village where you pretend at sisterhood? Surely, you have a girl you imagine being with, if only your eyes meet?â
âWell, IâŚâ
Yes, she imagines: Daisy yearns to press her body against a womanâs soft form, run her hands down a womanâs bare legs, slip her fingers inside a womanâs warm clefts. She yearns for a wicked, erotic decadence, as girls must become wives and mothers, providers of care and forgers of family: dependable, safe, maternal. A womanâs unloving lust, even when directed at men, is too unmoored from all things right and proper to be permitted freedom from shame. She knows this a marker of existence beyond decency, yet she cannot deny its call!
Only masculine wordsâuse, take, claim, possess, fuckâbear unjudging confidence, domineering but disconnected from that obligate family.
How does she put such a need to her tongue?
Most of all, Daisy remembers what she had before the years turned and womanhood crept by slow degrees upon a girl forced to feign acceptable passions. She wants invisible dragons conquered by swords made from broom handles; she wants princesses rescued by warriors tripping over their parentâs too-large boots. She wants childhoodâs easy friendship, their interactions possessed of an innocence incompatible with adult expectations. She envies a time in which romance and marriage felt as far distant from her world as aging or death.
She was meant to change, a girl inevitably becoming the woman.
One part of Daisy remained the sameâa part at odds with her newfound cravings.
âBut you want it, donât you?â
She crooks her head as if in thought, wadding the blouse in her hands. The answer, immediate and definite, lurks upon her tongueâa realisation bewildering in its certitude. Has she happened across another requirement at which she must perform conformity? She recalls this story well, told day in and out by Mama and her aunts: a hardworking husband, children, a life spent in service to a household. What else can marriage be? By comparison, pretending away the desire for another womanâs body seems simple; switching the gender from husband to wife canât ease her disquiet.
What does Daisy wish of her life? Why doesnât she know?
âThis is well-sewn,â she says, handing the blouse down to Sala, âand Mama always says it pairs smartly with your brown skirt.â
Sala beams and tosses the yellow aside. âShe has a good eye, your mama.â
Where does a woman, who must both remain a girl and become a virago, find her future? How can Daisy imagine what the stories donât describe? Any road ahead lies unpaved and wreathed in fog, each step forwards daring unrecognisable pitfalls.
Perhaps she knows only one thing: pretence wonât light her way.

King Reynard of Rosemere is in want of one thing: a son. (Well, a son conceived in wedlock and possessed of a specific genital configuration.) Despite his collection of put-aside wives, the gods have cursed him with daughters. Far too many daughters! After three decades of failure, he places his last hope in a sworn vow: his children will wed the Ten Kingdoms' fairest, bravest and boldest princes.
By blood or by marriage, Reynard will get his long-desired son ... and Bluebelle (who claims to be his first trueborn son) has long been a sharp thorn in Reynard's side. Worse, his daughters indulge such delusions! If any of his children need governing by a firm hand, it's Blue--and what good is the concept of royal marriage if this hand cannot belong to a husband? Preferably one located as far from Rosemere as possible?
His vow fails to reckon upon one thing: Blue.
For even if it requires a ceremony of questionable legality, he'll find a way to avoid obliging his father...
This story contains: A collection of siblings in want of affirmation for their trans kin; a guardswoman in want of fewer serpents; and a quoiromantic guard captain not in want of marriage (but also in want of marriage). Plus a marriage conducted by a death priestess; butches attracted to other butches; and a truth-indicating altar stone.
The Belles of Rosemere plays with a common trope in romance fiction, in which each installment showcases a different sibling's romantic happily-ever-after.
Except that each sibling must navigate amatonormativity by avoiding, escaping, eschewing, subverting or redefining partnerships, marriage and/or romance...
I have dedicated big parts of the past few months towards the creation of this community zine! And oh am I delighted that it has actually become real!! The digital file is officially open for anyone to read.
I am forever grateful for the people in my tiny aromantic community who decided to take part in this encounter of mines! I will forever be grateful and will be thinking fondly of creating such a big thing!
This bad boy is about 70 pages long!! Crazy!!
