fairytale au where rumi is a princess, mira is a knight, and zoey is a stablehand, and the three of them are best friends who grew up together, although zoey was always kinda on the outside because of her difference in class (she often got scolded for things the other two didnt get in trouble for, she wasnt allowed in the castle walls as often, etc).
their favorite time of day is sunset, and they always watch it together, no matter what.
one day, when they’re in their 20s, rumi gets a sleeping curse put on her by some evil sorcerer or something. mira and zoey rush to her rescue, and mira kisses her, waking her up, revealing them to be true loves, while zoey watches on, happy but heartbroken.
rumi and mira get engaged, and zoey begins to pull away a bit, thinking they’ll have no time now for their stablehand friend anymore, and being too hurt at the thought of her love being unrequited to see them. rumi and mira are constantly coming down to the stable still to look for her though, but she hides whenever they come around, afraid to face them and confess why she hasnt been around as much. they always are disappointed by her not being there, and progressively grow more and more worried about her.
the evil sorcerer who cursed rumi before comes back, and this time curses both rumi and mira just days before their wedding, thinking that will stop rumi from being woken up now. zoey immediately rushes to try and save her friends, and tries to find some way to save them now that true love’s kiss isn’t an option, but no matter what method she tries, it doesn’t work. theres a time limit on the spell, and once it runs out, the two of them will die.
eventually, with only a few minutes left to spare, zoey grows desperate and decides to try the last thing she hasnt tried yet. she apologizes to both of them, just before she kisses mira, and is shocked when mira wakes up. mira is shocked too, but she suddenly understands whats happened. instead of going to rumi herself, she urges zoey to go to her as well, and despite her initial hesitation, she rushes to kiss her too in the last few moments, apologizing again before doing so. rumi also wakes up, and though it takes her a second to get what happened, she’s not that surprised all things considered.
zoey falls to her knees. “im sorry. im sorry.”
rumi holds her face in her hands. “why are you apologizing?”
zoey shakes her head. “you know why.”
mira gets down on her knees besides her. “we don’t.”
zoey scoffs. “of course you do.” before they can answer, she laughs bitterly. “who wouldve thought that true love can be unrequited? how cruel of the universe to allow that.”
rumi and mira share a look. a silent conversation passes between them. “i dont know. maybe it can be,” mira responds carefully, “but yours isnt.”
zoey looks up in confusion. “what? how can that be? youre already each others true loves.”
rumi nods. “we are.” she smiles. “but i also think you’re our true love.”
zoey gapes at them. “are you saying what i think you’re saying?”
its mira’s turn to smile. “we are.”
“two true loves? for each of us? how is that possible?”
“i dont know,” rumi shrugs. “but it seems the universe has chosen us for each other. all three of us. we should honor that, shouldnt we?” she grabs a hand from both of them.
mira nods. “i think so.” she squeezes rumi’s hand and grabs zoeys free one.
zoey stares at them for a few moments. takes in their smiles. the honesty and love on her faces. then, she lets out a wet laugh. she returns their hand holds. “yeah. we really should.”
at sunset, the princess, the knight, and the stablehand are married in front of the most beautiful sunset they’ve ever seen.
