Summer sucks. We all know this. And this summer is sucking particularly hard, with heatwave after heatwave and no end in sight. I'm sure I'm not alone in yearning for the relief of Spooky Season. As my thoughts inevitably turn, longingly, to the macabre motifs of the Objective Best Season, I have a question for y'all:
When did the iconic image of the "haunted house" become codified?
You know what image I mean. When you think of a generic "haunted house," what does it look like? A ramshackle, multi-story Victorian-style dwelling with a tall attic-y thing (a gable? Is that what a gable is?), right? And the furniture still inside, maybe covered with dust cloths? Right? Like this:
I found this image by searching "haunted house clipart." Do the same and you'll see dozens of similar ones. If ghosts are going to show up and you don't want to do a whole worldbuilding project for it, they're going to show up somewhere like that, right?
So when did this standard take hold? It was already in place by the time the Universal Classic Monsters made the scene in 1931--Mickey Mouse visited just such a place two years earlier:
