Modern euhemerism sometimes makes us forget the horror of gothic horror.

Yes, it's super fun to do these speculative evolution projects in which vampires are a natural predator to humans, it can also be fun to imagine an ecological balance between vampires and humans, but really, those are "side projects". The actual vampire is just a person who starts eating people.

They think they are a higher being because they eat you.

You know that they are a monster because they want to eat you.

Whether it's natural or not doesn't really matter. Cannibalism is present in many species. What matters is that vampires are a symbol of human society eating itself under stress. Whether you choose to make vampires a symbol of dynastic aristocracy, capitalism, sexual predators, depravation and decadence, or anything else, the point is that it is horrific, not an ecologist fable about balanced ecosystem.

Parasites and predators are part of the ecosystem. Vampires are unbalance. It's like when you have too many of the same species in a small terrarium and they start eating each other. It's what happens when you put wolves that don't know each other in a cage and they attack each other until one is dominant. Vampires are a a crisis against the ecological balance.
