i would hate a targaryen restoration as the ending for asoiaf - i think the most profound and most targaryen end for daenerys is to the destroy what her ancestors made by fire, as the seven kingdoms itself rose out of the ashes of harrenhal and the field of flames. just read a nina auerbach essay on the orphan in victorian literature recently and it talked about the figure of the orphan who purifies the degenerate great house by fire and rebuilds something out of the ruin (jane eyre being the chief example) - what better end for dany, the series’ ultimate orphan? not because i think the targaryen dynasty is evil or analogous to a real world empire to be destroyed, or the previous feudal order of westeros was good - i think that’s a disingenuous reading of the text, which wants us to understand the targaryen epoch as mingled greatness and horror. but fire is life, because it is both destruction and creation, and this is daenerys’ element and her power. life is change, the old order cannot return, and something new must be made by the children the series follows so closely.
