Why is it only okay to speak out about Smeyer’s sexism, racism, homophobia, etc. when y’all want tumblr clout? When you want to justify your “re-examining” of a franchise from your childhood? Doing so is fine if you keep that energy in all aspects of injustice. Smeyer is racist— she dehumanized Native American children and made a protagonist a CONFEDERATE soldier. Yes, it’s just media but media reflects our values. Continuing to support her and defend her choices (THE CONFEDERACY???) may seem to be a far cry from the racism we see around us but it isn’t. Being complicit in such rhetoric only perpetuates the racism which is racist in and of itself. I don’t know what is so hard about condemning actions that hurt people regardless of whether or not it exists in media. I don’t understand why you people who write entire dissertations on the meaning of a pomegranate or meaningless discourse can’t take the time to speak out. Your silence is more harmful than you seem to understand.
