McCartney and De Kooning had similar work methods. One was what De Kooning called “exploring the accident”, where instead of erasing a mistake during painting, you jump on it to see where it leads to. Paul took a similar approach with his music, most notably with The Beatles of course: the feedback buzz at the start of “I Feel Fine” was a mistake for example, as was the rattling bottle at the end of “Long, Long, Long”.
