Despite me adoring Effie and Maysilee’s friendship in SOTR I’m a bit sad at the lost opportunity to have her bond with Wiress. Honestly the whole book the characters felt a bit.. sheltered? Isolated? Like Despite half of the d12 team consisting of characters we already met and love, I didn’t see nearly as much interactions between them as I would have wanted. And dare I say it kind of harms the story as well! I mean, yes the Effie and Maysilee bond means to show that the capapitolites and district people are truly just that-people. And that it’s not the people but rather the governments that are the root problem. But in addition to doing that S.C could have added an additional layer to May’s character by having her recognize that a person from another district (remember that there is also a huge divide between the districts of Panem which is a very important factor in the entirety of the HG story) is also just a girl!! For example Wiress could have shared something about her own experience with the stylists? It would also be a good foreshadowing moment for the way Haymitch is going to be treated later on!! Through their personalities and story functions Wiress and Maysilee could have been a perfect window into the world building of the games and add a deeper layer to Snow’s plot of growing resentment in between districts. And I know that Wiress and Maysilee might have not had a lot to talk about considering their differing interests and personalities, and yet I still yearn for 2 reaped girls who think they share little in common understanding each other and truly seeing each other past their reapings and districts. May could’ve reminded Wiress of girls from back home(WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN A PERFECT CHANCE TO GET A GLIMPSE AT ANOTHER DISTRICTS CLASS DIVIDE/PEOPLE!!) but all of that is either offscreened or did not take place at all. Lots and lots of missed opportunities imo

Oh wait an AU struck me where Haymitch and the squad are students who for some reason were assigned ‘mentors’ in the face of Wiress who is a senior and is a valedictorian and Mags aka the biology(fav topic: marine biology) teacher. As such a little study group is formed where the duo of mentors help the kids up their grades/get into clubs/participate in competitions and it’s very nice. And I don’t care they Louella and Lou Lou are 13, who said they have to be in the same grade??

I honestly think Haymitch and Wiress have some of the most complex relationships in the whole fanchchise: First off: they are peers, the most age difference that can have is 2-3 years only, but Wiress feels like she is at least a decade older, the games age you, the Capitol forces you to grow up in a span of 3 weeks, in SOTR she’s not a teenager anymore, she’s a victor, a murderer survivor. And now a mentor, and she tries her best to not think about how she could be classmates with Wyatt, so she tries to be as practical as she can, but here’s the thing: she’s still a teenager, no matter how much she or the Capitol denies it. She’s scared and unstable and already grieving, clinging to the hope that she won’t lose 8 people by aiding the rebellion, and when eventually she’s proven wrong in the worst way imaginable she’s left with Haymitch, an equally broken child-turned-adult. She knows what’s waiting for his family, she also knows that her own family is likely going to face the same fate. Her mind is fogged and cracked, his is dulled and angry. And she wants to, she truly does, not to resent him, but she does, and in return he resents her. Because she, even though she couldn’t have influenced the arena, fueled his hope of a brighter future only for him to lose everything and more, because he, even though she knows it’s not his fault, was one of the reasons she was tortured into oblivion. They also resent themselves, because it’s partially her fault he succumbed into addiction, because it’s his failure that caused her to lose her mind. They are stuck in a loop of miscommunication and guilt and resentment, all which are mixed with alcohol, trauma and physical distance. They can’t and won’t talk, not until years later. It takes them many years, arguments and quiet moments alone to achieve some sort of closure. It happens when she recovers enough from the trauma of the games, when he is sober enough to comprehend the memories. Maybe they talk for hours, maybe they just sit together, hands clasped and understanding settling between the victors. But one thing is certain: it’s far too late for them to tell each other : “it’s not your fault” they’ve carried that guilt for years, it will be harder to let go of it than to continue carrying it at this point, but what they can give each other is: I’m not mad. Because now they really are adults, the guilt is here, resentment-not so much, only in sparks of anger or a particularly bad night, but overall they no longer feel spite towards each other. She’ll never fully recover but she can invent and live and love again, and he is too deep into his addiction to ever allow himself these things, that is, not until the rebellion is over and he slowly starts to get better.

I am back with thoughts about Wiress and Chaff, aka the canon 40th games duo. They both had their victories close to each other (45&49) and based on what Wiress shares at the time of their games the tributes were treated much much harsher than what we see in the original trilogy. I think that creates a certain ‘us and them’ between the generations of victors, and Chaff and Wiress in this scenario are subconsciously bonded, despite their arenas and games and even traumas being completely different there is a part that both of them can relate to. And later on the two will also share a very special relationship with Haymitch, so they’re kinda homies in law lol. I honestly don’t think they’re that close even with all of these factors, but they most definitely share snarky comments about people they mutually dislike or the Capitolites. They also each have very VERY different opinions on Effie which leads to banter here and there. They’re cool like that, and for better or worse they understand each other the way neither Beetee nor Haymitch nor Seeder can.

Wiress nation how are we feeling about the fact that she provides one of the most interesting world building contributions to the games history, aka the fact that during her time as a tribute they kept them in barracks. All tributes, no separations, you have to share a space with other children whom you’ll be expected to murder and be murdered by. The absolute lack of privacy and agency that the tributes had up until the second quell is such a hugely overlooked thing, in no way am I saying that the after quell tributes somehow had it better but it definitely plays in the Capitol’s plot of diving the districts, even the victors. Because to Wiress and Chaff it would always subconsciously be “well at least they had that” in their minds, they would unconsciously already have a separation and a sense of injustice in their gut about the newest victors. Which is such an interesting thing to develop and think about for dynamics and relationships between victors, how their divide by age groups/districts is so much more than it seems and is a direct consequence of the Capitol’s tactics.

Life update the exams did in fact kick my ass but at least I’m finally on summer break

Absolutely random Wiress hc: she’s allergic to exotic fruits, like mango for example, she finds out along with everyone else when she goes into anaphylactic shock at her victory party, which earns her a few more weeks off press and Capitol meetings, she never though she would be grateful to get an allergy but then again she also never though she would win the Hunger games and here she is.

Probably my hottest hot take is that Wiress isn’t well liked among district 3. And huge chunk of the reason goes back to the second quell of course.
