Oh and here’s a list of horrible things Solas has done (completely unrelated trust me)
Helped Mythal essentially tranquilize the Titans, who were just scared and didn’t want people draining their blood from them to make themselves bodies.
Also basically helped commit a mental genocide of the dwarves, who he refers to as “severed arms imitating life” in Inquisition.
Destroyed Elvhenan by creating the Veil after Mythal bit the dust, condemning EVERY elf to being enslaved by the then-fledgling Imperium.
Killed Felassan because he gave two shits about the modern elves (I know Felassan definitely did bad shit, but really)
Stole the eluvians from Briala, ruining any chance for a modern slave rebellion (huh, it’s almost like he doesn’t care about modern elves AT ALL)
Gave Corypheus the orb and planned for him to die in the explosion so he could come and tear down the Veil.
Tried to tear down the Veil. Again. “Oh the events of Veilguard wouldn’t have happened if Solas succeeded” yeah the events of Veilguard wouldn’t have happened if Solas didn’t decide to try and tear down the Veil even after being “proven wrong” about modern people.
Doesnt. See. Modern. People. As. Alive.
Killed Flemythal for Mythal’s power.
Presumably had no plans to save the humans, dwarves, or Qunari. Funny how the ‘if Solas succeeded’ concept art exclusively shows elves, huh?

If you could rewrite Varric’s character what would you change?
Give him actual opinions of his own besides "Dwarves suck lol look how better I am for not being so dwarfy"
Have those opinions challenged throughout the story, maybe even resulting in development of his character to either reinforce his views or change them
So I just finished Cole's personal quest in Inquisition, and I decided to make him more spirit for the first time in a long time. I completely forgot what an ass Varric is about it holy shit.

Felassan

Some of y’all have not read the Masked Empire and it shows. Every time Briala idealizes the ancient elves/the Dalish, the whole time Felassan is like:
“Oh the ancient elves? That’s so funny, they definitely also had a hierarchy.”
“yeah yeah the ancient elven empire, so cool…so who do you think the servants were??”
“yeah the elves, they were great….they used to enslave spirits, also”
The whole thing is that tyranny has always existed?? Its just that the elves used to do it to each other instead of like humans oppressing the elves. And Felassan actually tries to help Briala elevate the modern elves (help free them from tyranny. Which, you know, was the whole point of the original rebellion). And Solas doesn’t just get mad at this…he straight up kills him.
And no, idc that he doesn’t “want to” or that he was sad about it. He actually quite literally didn’t have to.
Anyone who wants to pretend Solas wasn’t always Like That…I’m just really confused by you. Its giving: “but he loves me, so idc how he treats anyone else” (his closest friend and confidant btw)
Idc idc i loved Masked Empire, it added much needed context. Felassan, my beloved, you didn’t deserve that.

Tell me that BioWare is based in Canada without telling me that BioWare is based in Canada
so dragon age definitely has Racism Issues i can talk about literally forever (including in TME with the dalish) AND ALSO i'd like to be fair about this section for those who haven't read it or finished the book yet: this quote is from the POV of empress celene, who is the villain. she rules a genocidal empire, she fetishizes and abuses briala, and her POV sections are actively and intentionally unreliable, revealing her incorrect beliefs that she's progressive and kind, while in reality casually murdering oppressed people and never truly seeing non-human people as people, but rather objects she's entitled to use to serve her and her power. i actually love the sections written from her POV because they are realistically self-aggrandizing and awful. she is a well-written villain.
briala is the actual protagonist, felassan supports briala in a rebellion arc, and by the end, the book makes it clear that celene is an unrepentant piece of shit. so these lines are disgusting on purpose!
now, since i claimed infinite critiques, i'll add what i actually have issues with in TME: the dismantling of any solidarity between dalish and city elves. this narrative of in-fighting among oppressed people (to the degree of murder in the book!), or overt rejection of diasporic people by people with some shared identity but different experiences, and vice versa? it's a real thing that can happen, of course. i have witnessed and experienced variations on this.
it's also a narrative that is intentionally perpetuated by systems of white supremacy, and i'm not particularly compelled by fiction that furthers it, unless it's writers of color thoughtfully grappling with the nuances and pain.
the dalish in TME are reasonable to distrust anyone who wants to protect a known genocidal monarch.
the keeper's "we don't give a shit what happens to city elves, they're not our people" thing is not unheard of, but also... get that out of here tbh.
same with briala hearing one dude's beliefs and deciding to fuck over an entire clan and swear off the dalish as allies, as a monolith. it's not unheard of, but it's also not the only story that could have been told, nor is it the best or most compelling story. if i'd been an editor for weekes for this book, i would have suggested other means of portraying briala's disillusionment and intense loneliness, or at the very least a brief moment where someone, anyone, among the dalish desperately cares about city elves, even if failing to singlehandedly fix immense state violence.
i'm just really ready for more narratives and visions of messy but earnest solidarity, community care, and nuance. and by solidarity, i don't mean DATV's "thanks for helping the mafia resume abusing child soldiers even though you don't even live in treviso, solidarity!!!" i mean, like, dalish raids on slave auctions in minrathous, rivaini seers and their spirit friends helping heal southern mages from tranquility, groups of antiauthoritarian qunari understanding and honoring the nature of the titans in their qun religion ("earthquakes must shatter the land") and helping dwarves, titans, and blight/darkspawn awaken and heal... and so on.
Adrian is awesome i love her she's the best character in this book so far
they hate her for being based and goated

I know a lot of people are really partial to the idea that Solas and Inky never slept together, but I’m always going to headcanon they did. There is something so, so important to me about the way he insists that what they had was real, that he did not ‘take her’ as the Dread Wolf, that he did not use her as part of his agenda, that he wanted to stay with her as Solas, that he gave her every part of himself that he could give, including that.
And I especially love the idea of him always waiting for her to make the first move, that if she comes to him, seeks him out, asks for him, that it’s okay, because it’s what she wants, and what she wants is him, the him he wants desperately to stay with her as.
It’s just so 🥺
