Next mission begins today; Metroid Dread. Super Metroid lived up to the hype for the most part. The large amounts of backtracking were an understandable relic of the time. I still managed to get myself lost a couple of times after being so sure that couldn't happen now because we have an onscreen map. Some of the bosses including Motherbrain were a little bit disappointing. The graphics and sound are superb and the exploration of the various environments first time through is just an absolute joy. So glad I finally got to play this all the way through. It was one of those games that I had started multiple times and never finished. The Super Nintendo was never released in South Africa and the only way I could play it was through emulation which never did feel quite right with me. Starting the year off with Metroid. Lots of Metroid. I have Dread just looking at me impatiently on the shelf while I get through Metroid II (done as pictured) and Super Metroid. Happy new year indeed. P.s. Metroid II is so deceptively good. It's apparent weaknesses are actually what make it intriguing. The monochrome pallette; sparse soundtrack and claustrophobic corridors give you a sense of true isolation in a hostile environment. Save points and supplies are so sparse that it is truly terrifying when you encounter an enemy while having so little health and ammo. My 13 hour playtime could have been cut down if I had leaned more on a guide with a map but again the experience would have been diminished. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster for PS Vita. I have never played any version of this game but as with practically any FF game it always gives me chills when I see and hear it. I have actually downloaded and listened to the opening music "To Zanarkand" a lot. I don't know when I will get around to finally playing it but I am certain that I'm going to love it. I have only ever finished FF III, IV, V and VII so I would probably play VI next which it will be a while before I get to this. Adventure Comics Special 1 featuring The Guardian. An interesting story revealing the backstory of The Guardian. It takes place through an interview of sorts with Jimmy Olsen. It's an understated story which turns out to be the perfect tone for the complicated subject matter. I found out recently that the Adventure Comics title actually predates both Detective Comics and Action Comics. It was in fact DC''s second title ever following New Fun. Also; there was this cool double page ad for MK Vs. DC Universe. When I moved out of my parents home I had over 20 short boxes of comic books; a collection I had been building since 2008. Due to space limitations I only took one box with me. I have recently recently come into some more space and picked up a second box this past Sunday. I went through what was there and tried to pick out things I knew I hadn't read. I find it really enjoyable just sorting through the books and packing them in alphabetical order. 260 books ready and waiting for me. I do miss the weekly grind of collecting and reading. It's an amazing hobby to be fully involved in. Batman Returns Released in theaters in 1992 and reuniting the crew of director Tim Burton, lead Michael Keaton and composer Danny Elfman. Like the best sequels do it retained everything that made the original so great and added to it. The versions of Catwoman and The Penguin as portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny De Vito are iconic and I think are what many people see in their heads when they hear the names of these characters. The visuals are unmistakably Burton and the Elfman score is once again a perfect match. Still an incredibly entertaining film with many memorable moments (Catwoman threatening to eat a bird, anyone?).
