Bones Shredder Location: California Album: Morbid Little Thing, out September 19 via Sunken Teeth Records

Everything about Bones Shredder is about the element of surprise, like Randy Moore was cackling through every aspect of his latest act. After a career in various alt and punk bands, it was time for something of his own, and Bones Shredder is certainly singular. The music video for the catchiest song of the year (“Daylight”) shouldn’t be an ode to retro horror, with the kind of comedic sensibilities of Sam Raimi. I don’t want to imply that Morbid Little Thing is a blood-splattered one trick pony, where everything is for shock value. Instead, we have some of the most personal, poignant power pop that’s been released in decades, where the song’s impressive depth reveals how much of himself Moore poured into his pet project - the claim that actual bone will be inlaid into the vinyl is assumedly true.

Bones Shredder came to fruition after a long ‘soul searching’ period in my life,” Moore says. “I’ve played in various bands and musical projects since I was a teenager. During that time, I’ve been in bands working collaboratively with some of my best friends while working as a hired gun for others - never a project where I made 100% of the aesthetic decisions. After that soul searching period, I came out with a mantra, ‘make a record that’s unapologetically myself.’ I wanted to take all the things I love about music and make something I could be proud of, no matter what anyone else thought of it. I love monster movies! I’ve always felt there’s more emotion and humanity to them, themes that carry over into the human existence. My two loves outside of music are comedy and horror [so I want to run with those in Bones Shredder]. With the help of my powerhouse brother, Dylan Moore on drums and my amazingly talented friend and producer Henry Chadwick, I think we achieved just that”

Sometimes, in fandom, we just want to write id-tastic fic that rolls around in tropes that might be viewed as problematic. But we don’t want to address the problematic side of things in this particular fanwork; we just want to roll around and wallow.

It is considered courteous to give readers a heads-up via use of AO3 tags. I propose a tag that signals that a given fanwork is for rolling around, not giving a measured evaluation of anything. The MCU has carved out a space for this sort of fic with the “HYDRA Trash Party” tag, for which I commend them. Trash Party is a bit too specific to cover all of the ground I’m thinking of here, though; I propose “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat.”

For those of you not familiar with Arrested Development, Michael Bluth finds a paper bag in the freezer labeled “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat.” He opens the bag, finds a dead dove, and reacts as follows:

The “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat” tag would essentially be a “what it says on the tin” metatag, indicating “you see the tropes and concepts tagged here? they are going to appear in this fic. exactly as said. there will not necessarily be any subversion, authorial commentary condemning problematic aspects, or meditation on potential harm. this fic contains dead dove. if you proceed, you should expect to encounter it.”
