I think it's the new npcs specifically I and others have issues with. Heavy npc focus has been a thing since rota 2 for vbs (basically once nagi was invented) and it ties into their themes of community and legacy and such. The newer characters despite how much time is spent on them are very difficult to connect with the same way we connected to the other kids on vivid street and radder. Mainly the boys. They try to instantly make us attach to them by connecting them to radder but it's incredibly forced and not really believable. How to not to a retcon 101. It's hard to grow attached to them as rivals when their motivations and connections to the character are just kinda told to us and we have to be like Okay so these guys were here and just never mentioned for the last 4 years of story but they're important to radder and they lowkey had a parental figure relationship with radder. Sure. 👍.

The girls are a bit more interesting and have ties to Douglas aka Sakaki for VBS (as in. Guy who is very obviously the antagonist) but they don't have the same level of focus as the boys. They really want to focus on the white boys. But the white boys aren't interesting characters (i think one of them gets development in go all out but I haven't read it yet). The white girls aren't particularly interesting either but they at least have an evil dad that they have a strained relationship with that's more compelling bc it's at least something.

Arata, Souma, radder, and Kotaro all had events dedicated to them (not so much Kotaro but he appears way more so it balances out) and they all had interesting backstories and personalites that we got to explore in more depth and they had like. Actual character arcs. Ignoring the plane crash in ORS. Like America arc would've been wayyyy more interesting if they used Arata and Souma instead of the white boys. They're characters we're already attached to so they don't have to spend time and clumsily give reasons to why they can speak japanese and how they know the main cast and in general have them around a lot. Like they could just have Arata guide VBS around bc he used to live there and then we could focus on actual plot and stuff.

Like. The problem isn't really with the amount of time spent on side characters, they've always been like this because thematically it's a necessity for VBS. The issue is that you REALLY feel it in america arc because the characters are not well written or interesting so when the stories give them attention we don't care and just want them to get back to VBS.

Like compare to say, Asahi from WxS. He gets a lot of screentime in curtain call and that was his only appearance for a long time. But we like Asahi (ignoring when the fandom wanted to kill him for a few years bc they decided he was evil for wanting to tear apart wxs (???)). He has a likable personality and his connection to WxS feels natural, he's a fan of them. We later give him a connection to Rui (they both fans of the same director) but again it's natural. Tom Grey's never been mentioned before but random director guy isn't anyone important so we're not gonna argue it. We spend enough time with him before he starts explaining his backstory that we like him enough to listen to his POV for a few minutes.

The white boys kinda just show up, duel with Akito, namedrop radder, and leave. Even in their next appearance that does a bit more it's just so forced. They're nice enough but their backstory is so stupid. If they'd done what they did with Asahi and made them fans of radder it would've been better but no they go for familial. For some fucking reason. Like 4 years into the game we aren't gonna buy that. We know radder and are attached to them as characters. Who the fuck are these guys.
