Money Magic
This post is for and dedicated to @powderandclay who generously commissioned me by way of donation to the CvltSqvad Fundraiser.
This time, the goal is simple: Money Drawing.
I thought I’d start this one with a few interesting superstitions from my area that relate to finances:
Never give a gift of a wallet unless a paper bill or silver coin is placed inside first; This is thought to prevent accidentally crossing anothers finances, and metaphorically ensures they will always have money in their pocket.
If you feel someone has looked over your wealth, burn your old wallet, and buy a new one.
Should you find an intact buckeye nut, keep it in your wallet or purse until another can be found next year - This is thought to metaphorically ensure one’s purse will never be empty.
A similar thought surrounds silver coins - One should never allow ones wallet to become entirely empty, as it represents a sort of metaphorical bankruptcy. At the least, always keep a single silver coin in your wallet to stave off poverty.
If the palm of the left hand itches - You’ll receive money. If the right, you will be paying for something unexpected. (Some variations have the right hand as meaning you will be shaking hands with new people soon)
Keeping a bowl of silver coins near the front door of your house ensures the flow of money into the home will not be impeded. A bowl is generally used in most variations, as a container with a lid is thought to metaphorically constipate the flow of wealth.
Sprinkling finely powdered sugar around the threshold of a business is thought to draw customers. Similar tales speak of the same with basil or cinnamon. When I was working hotlines, I used this to fair effect to treat the area I would use to lay out my cards.
Spells I was able to find in written context engineered toward this goal are as follows:
From, The Galdrabok:
In A Century of Spells, author Draja Mickaharic recommends a general money drawing incense*, which could also be used as a sprinkling powder, like those referenced above. The formula given is simple, and I have converted it into by-part measures:
Money Drawing Incense
1 part Benzoin Gum Resin
2 parts Cinnamon Powder
In Traditional Witchcraft: A Cornish Book of Ways, Author Gemma Gary provides an especially adorable charm for good fortune, provided as follows:
“Three Bees Charm
A popular West Country charm of three fine bumble bees that have passed from their busy working life into the realm of spirit, where shall instead busy themselves bringing health, happiness, and good fortune into the home in which they are proudly houses within a fine blue pouch”
As well as another:
“Lucky Coins
Coins of unusual appearance, such as those that have been pierced with a hole, best of all in the shape of a star, are considered to be lucky and are kept together near the heart of the home in a draw-strung bag. Coins that have been found are also lucky and should be kept rather than spent to attract more money to follow into the home”
In The Goodly Spellbook: Olde Spells for Modern Problems, Author Dixie Deerman Provides the following magic square, reputed to remediate poverty:
In Slavic Witchcraft: Old World Conjuring Spells and Folklore, Natasha Helvin provides several spells and folk charms for wealth, the simplest are as follows:
“Gain Money With a Magnet
To gain money, put nine of your hairs in a red flannel pouch along with a large bill and a small magnet: Keep this pouch a secret and safe”
“Increase The Chance for Unexpected Money
[…] go to an open field. There, build a small fire. Put dry wormwood, a strand of your hair, a cut nail from the thumb of your right hand, a bird feather, a clover leaf, a lock of black cat fur, and a folded note detailing the amount of money you wish to receive into a bowl. Fill the bowl with milk and put it over the fire. When the milk boils, pour it and all the other contents into a hole in the ground that you have dug. Fill the hole and say:
I bring this sacrifice to the lord of the earth and the underground, that it may grow in my house and in my purse. The words are said, the deed is done, all is settled. So Be It!”
“To Always Have Money in Your House
To always have money in your house, hide four new shiny coins minted in a non-leap year under the threshold in four corners of your house and say:
Gold to gold, silver to silver, money to money to this threshold in this house.”
“Coin Talisman
Take twelve coins of the same denomination, minted only in even and leap years. After the sun sets, hold all the coins in the palms of your hands. Shake them so that they move freely and roll over the palms. Open your hands and throw the coins in front of you on the table. Put aside all the coins that landed on tails. Gather those that landed on heads, shake them in your hands, and throw them on the table again. In the same way, set aside the coins that landed on tails and gather the ones that landed on heads. Repeat these steps until you have only one coin left. Wrap it in red cloth and store it as a monetary talisman.”
As usual, any of these spells could likely be improve by performing them within the correct planetary day and hour of Jupiter, as well as first petitioning the aid of any deities or spirits the witch works with.
