as much as i’m enjoying one piece, the alabasta arc has reminded me why i’ve almost exclusively read shojo manga these last few years. bc why are men incapable of imagining that female characters could be strong —beyond nurturing, self sacrificing mental power, that is. like zoro can be stabbed through the heart, luffy can be beaten half to death, sanji can have his bones shattered, but they’d still find the miraculous strength to beat the enemy. meanwhile, nami, someone who went undercover at the big age of ten to protect her people and survived in one of the seven war lord’s layer can only stand back and watch as these guys fight in what’s clearly one of the most defining arcs for her character so far? vivi, a princess who learned to fight at a young age, infiltrated and climbed high up the ranks of a secret organisation, and discovered the identity of a warlord, can’t do anything but be angry on her knees and get tossed around by a fucking crocodile until big strong sanji comes to save them?
