AIM Blog-O-Log: Harvard and Stanford to Recruit in JA!
It’s only fitting that we launch the AIM Blog-O-Log with some BIG news! Harvard and Stanford will be recruiting from Jamaica directly and are coming in a couple of weeks! We know that we see some of the best and brightest students in the world right here in Jamaica, so it’s only fitting that some of the best universities in the world should come to meet them directly!! UPenn is also a part of the trip, but that’s no surprise, they’ve known that Jamaican students warrant serious attention for a while - they’re here every year (last year the departure almost got sticky with hurricane Sandy!)… and they’re hands-down the most popular Ivy League school for Jamaican kids - AIM has 4 kids - big ups to Christian, Jonah, Zach and Raf - there now and many more who got in but went elsewhere!
Duke and Georgetown will also be part of this historic visit (hey Emma B.!) Talk about heavy hitters!! It’s a great opportunity for our students and parents to get first-hand info, but an equally fantastic opportunity for admissions officers to see our high schools and meet with guidance counselors and principals to give much needed context and texture to the applications hitting their desks this Fall! Calling talented would be Engineers, Entrepreneurs and CEOs, Academics, Doctors, Lawyers, Innovators, kids who will do jobs that don’t exist yet… World Shapers and Changers but make no mistake about it, the competition is intense - especially as an international student seeking financial aid. Of these schools Harvard is the only need-blind institution for internationals! So admit rates can be under 5% (for internationals seeking aid). Big up to AIM kids at Stanford, Duke and Penn!
As Ivy League grads we know how tough it is to get in and stay in, so the question we challenge our students with starting in 4th form is this - why should a university invest in you? What is your unique value proposition? This should be something kids work on throughout high school!
But Upper and Lower 6ers … if you’ve got what it takes … What’s Our advice? Use this opportunity to get to know the admissions counselors and the universities - if your profile is good enough to warrant a second look by these schools chances are one of your key questions should be… Which school can best serve my needs? This means you’ve got to be clear on what those needs are, and if you’re not then where can you best discover them? Message us for deets on this historic visit! If you’ve got what it takes, you don’t want to miss this! **** We will be Blog-O-Logging every other Sunday - so for the latest excitement with AIM and our kids, education and the world of college admissions … Stay tuned!

AIMtips: Vocabulary Building
Whether it's the SAT, ACT or GRE, chances are you'll have to learn vocabulary. Here are some tips to make your vocabulary building a lot easier:
Read! Read! READ!- This works because the more books you read, the more likely it is that you will come across new words.
Make flash cards- Not only can you study from the flash cards that you make, but the process of writing the word and its meaning will help you to remember it.
Use the words in sentences- This will put the word in some kind of context, making it easier to remember.
Use a dictionary!- When you hear words that you don’t know in movies or read them in books, always look them up!
Play word games- Scrabble, Boggle, and crossword puzzles are all good ways to learn new words. These and other word games are available for the computer, so you are not dependent on a partner to play.
Make connections- Say the word aloud to activate your auditory memory. Relate the word to words you already know. For example, the word GARGANTUAN (very large) has a similar meaning to the words gigantic, huge, large, etc. You could make a sequence: small, medium, large, very large, GARGANTUAN. Come up with examples of the word. A good example of gargantuan would be a dinosaur.
Use mnemonics- A mnemonic could be an image, a rhyme, a formula—anything other than straight repetition of a word and its definition. When you use mnemonics, the crazier the image or rhyme you can make up, the better because that will make it stick.

Congrats!! - You're In, Now What??
Happy Happy Graduation to my Seniors and Upper 6ers! I am so excited for you guys! :-) Time to enjoy your summer, and start to plan for college in the fall. The next 4 years are SUPER important strategically .... so we are so thrilled to be presenting a workshop - "You're In, Now What?" - because let's face it, international students need to know how to get jobs post-graduation in the US (yes, it's still possible), the ones going to Canada need to know how to position themselves for Canadian residency, you guys need to know how to create a great grad school worthy profile... so it's important to keep your eyes on the prize. Yes, you got in, but undergraduate is JUST the beginning. Stay tuned! Love! AIMTeam
