Playing Oblivion for the first time, really.
I haven't really been able to connect easy to my HoK. Like who he is. But I think I've finally figured out his character and the arc over oblivion
Breton. Raised by a single mom in the waterfront district of the IC (imagining it closer to the scale of Novigrad's riverside slums in W3). Spent a lot of time in kid's gangs but developed the opposite personality of a ne'er-do-well.
So like, very strong sense of justice and order, would be perfect as a guard with how they're characterized. But overzealous, to the point of vigilantism. Very 'ends justifies the means' kind of personality. Channels that into the FG, and a few instances of charitable or spite-driven theft.
Has a sense of humor, a juvenile and macabre one at that, but chokes it down. Despite/because of his impoverished background, he tends to pretend to a higher station than he had. So a lot of false dignity, an unlearned appreciation for good cheese and fine wine. Channels that into advancing the MQ ranks.
Imprisoned over committing a small crime to stop a bigger injustice and then fighting the guards over it. Grows very impressed with Martin in their travels together. Grows very attached, even, not even in a gay way just a weird kind of spiritual way.
So he's devastated at the end of the MQ. Joins the Arena to kind of commit suicide, but his battle experience is too much. The AF gives him a bit of push to be someone but he ends getting killed retraumatizing the HoK
At this point, kind of a miserable drunk, despite everything. Really thinks about good and evil and breaks, finding it absurd after this point. Maybe Mankar Camoran was right?
Attempting to reinvent the concept of justice leads him through the TG questline. But after some time ends up killing someone in a robbery gone wrong, and that point his personality is so broken he goes through the DB questline.
Finally after all that, SI, and is manteled by Sheogorath.
Sometimes headcanon means "hypothetical diegetic explanation of something unexplained" and sometimes it means "things that directly aren't canon but I don't really care" and I kinda just want to give TES's post hoc conlangs respectable grammars.
have you ever thought about how nice it is that people just die all at once in tes
like an enchanter assassin just has to make a blow and usually your black soul gem just fills. in our world unless people's brains are destroyed it usually takes like 15 minutes for them to actually die-die and most of the kinds of wounds you'd inflict in tes would be more like "several hours of bleeding out, in a coma if you're really lucky"

Mod idea that'll never be accomplished
Destroy the Dark Brotherhood from the Inside
Basically DB starts up as normal but if you attack Astrid someone knocks you out like Karliah.
You basically wake up in the Sanctuary with the implication that you'll be poisoned in your sleep for refusing what comes next. and you're supposed to take out (what Astrid has deemed) Rogue Brothers insulting Sithis. So you go out killing DB/MT agents in disguise or something for the radiant quests. You have to join the PO and 'spy' for them though.
There's two or three OCs in the DB, making it simpler. Maybe someone each to complement Veezara, Gabriella, and Festus, like an apprentice shadowscale, a bosmer skilled with the bow, an old high elf who was a death nurse in the great war.
Muiri happens, you can just kill Dufont, guy has it coming.
You proceed to the point of hearing the NM. You're the listener, but you don't like it. She doesn't care. You get the contract from Montierre.
At VV's wedding, take out the shadowscale apprentice, then just cause a commotion, no need to kill the guests.
You fake the PO guy's son's death, disappear the bosmer.
Get the gourmet mission from festus. Take out the poison making altmer, captain tells you to go back to the sanctuary and clean out any stragglers.
You can watch Astrid die then choose either to kill the Emperor and go on the 'db' timeline or abort and be in the 'dtdb' timeline. You just feel a little bit better about yourself. And Narfi lives, or something.
Skyrim Mods: Lore Additions
I know I've made a post like this before, but of course it is lost to the aether. These are some mods I like that expand the scope of history found in Skyrim, by adding nods to lore found in other Elder Scrolls games (and books.)
Skyrim: Expanded Lore
Ever feel like things mentioned in Skyrim's books or in conversation don't really feel reflected in the environment? Or like old lore was thrown out entirely? Check out these mods.
"You there. The Dawnguard is looking for anyone willing to fight against the growing vampire menace. What do you say?"
My Khajiit vampire:
testing community shaders + reshade!
Adds new Redguard hairstyles. 18 male, 13 female.
YOOOOO!!!

TES (mod?) quest idea or something
On one end of the map there's a young drunk causing a scene, just crying or moaning some girl's name. Seems to live with an old lady, his gran, who asks you don't judge him too harshly. Also inquires if you know anything about necromancy, excuses it with saying she misses her husband, pay it no mind.
On the other end of the map there's a family, parents with 2 kids, conspicuously same family name. You can bring up the drunk but they act like they don't know him.
But at some point you catch the grandma visiting them, with gifts for the grandchildren.
You ask the gran about the drunk. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who can fend for himself long. She asks you not to talk about him in front of the kids.
Back in the drunk's town gran explains. He had a sister. They got along. But when he was like 8 and she was like 6 they roughhoused and she accidentally hit her head hard on a rock. Parents thought he murdered her outright, disowned him, grandma took him in. it's been 15~20 years-ish
He won't forgive himself. Blames himself.
Gran wants you to bring him to where she died, summon her ghost, make her talk to him. So you do.
He won't go in the city gate because his family. If the parents see him anyways they'll try to call the guards but nothing will come of it. Will be very vocally hostile, he'll just be ashamed and clam up.
You bring him to the site to his protestation. Summon the girl. Ghost berates him for throwing his life away and not living his for her. Sympathizes with but admonishes her parents. But he thinks he's just hallucinating because he's often pink-elephants drunk. "You're just a figment of my mind, I can't forgive myself" "I get why it was hard for them, but mom and dad can't hold a grudge for me either. why don't you find a woman? have a daughter, name her after me, make her happy if you need redemption". "i can't marry anyone because girls just remind me of how i failed you" "gross, brother" "you're not real why am i even saying anything" etc.
"I see her too" you say and because TES he responds with a racialized insinuation you're just as drunk as he is or high on skooma. The conversation goes like that for a bit. She asks you to take the drunk back to gran.
The gran pays you for trying but nothing really comes of anything. Optionally you can tell off the parents which just lowers their disposition. The moral? there is none.
Btw this year I got the funniest tramp stamp I could think of
Being Dragonborn working like the Avatar state and you can talk to previous Dragonborns
That's actually a really cool concept
OH I love this... do you think it'd apply only to "full" Dragonborn or could the LDB talk to, say, any random Septim?
Hmmm, I think either could be interesting. I kind of like the idea of "full" Dragonborns only, since it would highlight others as opposed to a bunch of Septims. Would be awesome to see Dragonborns who had been lost to history
The idea of there being "full" Dragonborn as opposed to "non full" ones is a fan invention actually. Alessia did not have the power to absorb dragon souls because she was not born Dragonborn, she made herself one - the post linked in UESP is one by MK where he says her power was basically her own drive to achieve freedom, an impossible thing, and on her deathbed make covenant with the Dragon God.
I actually made a post about the whole Dragonborn thing in the past, and its heredity. Link here.
Anyway uh. The avatar thing is already canon, technically. The Amulet of Kings was said to hold the Oversoul of every Emperor who has previously worn it, so the Emperors traditionally would receive counsel from the previous Dragonborn rulers by communing with the Amulet. Unfortunately this is not a thing innate to the Dragonborn and Martin destroyed it so, blame the guy.
Makes sense about about the “full” Dragonborn thing being a fan invention. I know the Amulet used to serve as that to speak with the former Dragonborn Emperors but I that isn’t quite the same to me as talking to any previous Dragonborn, including the Dragonborn Heroes. The Greybeards warn of the downfall of those before the Last Dragonborn do to the voice tempting them to seek power.
Speaking to those people would be much more interesting in my opinion and actually fit within Skyrim
