i really want to get into watching/actually understanding hockey after reading omgcp but am not sure how to start! do you have any recommendations for good ways to go about getting into it?

When it comes to getting into watching hockey the best way to do it is to just start watching. Bilasport is a good free stream website if you don't have access to cable. Listen to the broadcasts and try to follow the games, which should help. If you have a friend who's into hockey watching a game with them so you can questions is also a good idea.

In terms of actually understanding hockey/sport culture, I have some book/article recommendations that I'll drop here.

i have a master's degree in history that focused on the way canadian nationalism is implicated in the toxic culture created by hockey, but go off king

i am begging non-hockey fans of omgcp to read like just one article on the homophobic and masculine fraternalism of hockey culture. it's like just sometimes dabbling in the aesthetic of hockey without doing the work of understanding how the culture is problematic leads to some really, really inappropriate comments.
