jongerry propaganda post, in which i'm proving that they were made for eachother and are platonic soulmates. i hope my rambling makes sense
i feel like they were the only people who could trurly understand eachother. both traumatised by leitners as children and associated Jurgen Leitner with that trauma
both weren't loved by their parental figures.
both never had any real friends.
when Jon became the head archivist he was so scared and lost, and suddenly he reads a statement about a thing that traumatised him, and about someone who destroyed that thing. like, i can't imagine the feeling of finding someone who seems to know what's going on, who seems to fight the things that destroyed your life. and he's your age! sure, he probably murdered his mother and is kinda creepy, but still! a potential ally!
except that the next thing that Jon learns about Gerry is that he's dead. but that doesn't stop him from seeking information about him and gaslighting himself that maybe, maybe Gerry faked his own death (even though Jon can Know things already). gradually, Jon started to know more and more about Gerry. he heard his mother's statement, he read about all the people Gerry saved and the people he hurt. he never met him but still thought about him as a friend (that would be our Gerard).
he was so desperate for someone who could understand and explain, for someone who would be at his side. damn, Gerry worked with Gertrude and there was this brief moment when they might have passed each other in the institute's hallway.
then it turned out that Jon's hopes were true and Gerry still was around! well, at least a part of him.
i just can't imagine how devastated it must be when you finally meet the one person you thought might help, the person that you considered a friend even though you never even met, the person who you related to, you saw yourself in, the person who was your only hope, and he wants you to kill him.
but still, their short conversation helped Jon so, so much. finally someone explained what's going on, didn't judge him for his powers, tried to help and treated him like a person.
now from Gerry's perspective, all this is even crazier. because Jon knew Gerry, he saw him at his worst and still liked him, meanwhile Gerry wasn't even aware that there's a new archivist. Gerry was used as a tool his entire life, and he was once again handed over, to this very very lost guy who apparently got the most dangerous job ever and tries to save the world all by himself without even knowing about the fears. Gerry doesn't even know Jon's last name, but he still agrees to help, he gives the most information he has, drops his life story and after a 30 min conversation shares his nickname that only his father called him and considers Jon his first and only friend. and then he dies. from Jon's hands.
if Gerry lived, then things would go very differently. they needed eachother, and had eachother for this brief moment.
after Gerry died, the only memory of him was in the statements, and Jon read them all. he knew his mother, his father, everything about his childhood, everything he did, and he preserved the memory of Gerry Keay and defended him.
yes, Jon needed Gerry for information, but he viewed him as his equal and as a person, and he resisted the Eye to free him.
Gerry gave Jon answers and understanding, Jon gave Gerry humanity and dignity. they could've been their biggest supports. Gerry knew what's it like to be the archivist, he knew what the entities do to people so he would never shame Jon for using his powers, and Jon knew what it's like to feel unloved and he would never use Gerry as a tool. things would look different.
