A short review for each of the stuff I watched this year:
(Some slight spoilers for anyone who hasn’t seen any of them)
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie:
Honestly I had fun with it and I did like it, but frankly I wished it was better in terms of story and character development.
A lot of the references are appreciated (stuff like Dry Bones Bowser and Mr Game And Watch were genuinely surprising to see) and I enjoyed how fun the action scenes were.
But in terms of stuff that I didn’t like, the story and character development could have been better, and as much as I love the references, it really hurts the story since there’s no anchor to connect it.
Characters like Rosalina barely have any screen time which sucks honestly cuz I actually do love her.
Fox McCloud was genuinely entertaining as a character despite the marketing team spoiling him before the movie even came out. (On a side note, I find it funny how he was given more screen time than Rosalina lol)
Yoshi was also fun, but barely had anything to do other than accompanying Mario & Luigi.
And Bowser and Bowser Jr, while I do enjoy their father and son dynamic, could have had their development a little bit better honestly.
Other stuff like Rosalina’s backstory being changed to being Peach’s sister was alright ig, I thought it was interesting but not that engaging tbh.
So all in all, I had fun and I liked it, but I think I could have been better.
Gameoverse and Planetronika:
I’m grouping these 2 together because frankly I don’t have that much to say, but honestly I think both of them are a pleasant watch and rather entertaining.
For Gameoverse I have to admire the concept and the fact that it manages to be very watchable and entertaining to a degree, there is a few stuff that I can could be improved later on if the series does get greenlit, but overall still enjoyable and I loved it.
And for Planetronika it was primarily for the aesthetic, I got to appreciate the early to mid 2000s art style, it’s very reminiscent of those animated shows you’d see on like Jetix (Anyone remembers Jetix being a thing? I do) granted there some things that were a bit iffy, obviously the amount of fan service being added in was a bit too much and could have been toned down a bit, and there wasn’t really a story behind what’s going on, it was just rather random, but who knows maybe in a few years, it’ll probably be fixed.
Both overall I think both shows are really entertaining and good, and I do hope they improved on some of the issues when they get more episodes in the future.
(And yes both Kit and Butterfly are hot, THERE I SAID IT)
The fact that it took Sony this long to make any project involving any of the Spider-People is insane because OH MY GOD, this is really great.
But yea, Spider-Noir might just be the best Spider-Man project I’ve seen, and the best Marvel and Superhero TV show I’ve seen this year (And no I haven’t watched either The Boys, Invincible, nor Daredevil Born Again but I heard each of them are good in their own way).
One thing I will say before I talk about the story and all that, I love that they gave you the option to either watch it in Color or Black and White, and of course I opted to watch the Black and White version since it just feels right, plus it’s like a nice homage to the Noir genre.
But anyways, the show had a great story and of course being a crime detective series, it has a mystery that needs to be solved, and it’s done really well here, honestly had me on the edge of my seat the whole time.
The characters were great too, Nicolas Cage was perfect as Spider-Man Noir, and you can tell that he went all out for the role just being his classic crazy Nic Cage self and I love it.
The other characters were also great as well, and I love how each of them got their own arcs and even gave them closures which I really love (Especially with both Tombstone & Sandman).
So all in all, the series was a great watch, and Sony should have just sticked to making more stuff like this and not giving any of the Spider-Man villains their own solo projects because NOBODY wanted them.
